In 2022, with the help of the Friends of Shawnee Scholarship, SSU started providing free undergraduate tuition for qualifying students with demonstrated financial need.

Free Tuition Program is Making College Possible
College affordability is a concern for most graduating high school seniors. According to SSU President Jeff Bauer, Shawnee State University is making college possible for these students through a free-tuition program.
Shawnee State University announces Free Tuition to Need-Based Students from southern Ohio and northern Kentucky
Shawnee State University has announced a Free Tuition Initiative – offering free tuition to Pell-eligible first-time students who have a minimum 3.0 GPA and 18 ACT score living in Scioto, Lawrence, Adams, Pike, Jackson, and Ross counties in Ohio, as well as Greenup, Boyd, and Lewis counties in Kentucky.
Students who successfully complete this program will:
- Develop proficiency in the tools and techniques related to this studio practice.
- Cultivate excellent observation skills as well as a strong understanding of 2D principles and color.
- Create a cohesive body of work that is well considered and conceptually rigorous.
- Employ a vocabulary for critique and presentation.
All bachelor degree seeking students take the General Education Program. Fine arts students select a concentration in ceramics, drawing, illustration, painting or photography as well as studio courses outside of their concentration for electives.
