MOT Prerequisite Courses

Applicants must meet university admission criteria and successfully complete the following prerequisite coursework in conjunction with, or in addition to, an earned bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in any area of study. Students are strongly encouraged to meet with the Graduate Admissions, (740) 351-4778, for academic advising and assistance in planning prerequisite completion before applying to the MOT program. Choosing a bachelor’s degree that aligns with your interests and skills is also recommended.

Note: Applicants are not required to be an Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) or hold an associate’s degree in OTA to apply for the MOT program.

  • Biology prerequisites must be completed within the past 5 years.
  • All other prerequisite coursework must be completed within the past 10 years.

Selection Criteria

All applicants must meet the minimum criteria in the University Catalog and submit complete application materials. Applications are scored across four weighted areas:

  • Volunteer Evaluation – 20%
    Minimum of 40 hours required. Evaluations are scored based on quality. Applicants who do not waive the right to review their evaluation may receive lower scores due to limited candor from reviewers.
  • Grade Point Average – 50%
    • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (from baccalaureate degree)
    • A grade of 'C' or better is necessary for each prerequisite course.
    • Applicants with overall GPA below 3.0 must take the GRE and score above the 50th percentile
  • Personal Essay – 20%
    Written through OTCAS (or SSU portal for SSU undergraduates), scored blindly and independently by admissions committee faculty.
  • References – 10%
    Three required, submitted via OTCAS or SSU portal, from individuals familiar with the applicant’s academic or professional abilities.
