First in your family to go to college? We are too.

As first-generation college graduates, we remember what it was like to try to find our way through the college process, figure out how we would pay for college, and find the right balance between school obligations and other responsibilities. We learned a lot along the way - and are here to help you.

For more information on First Generation mentoring and programming, contact SSU Interim Dean of Students Linda Koenig at (740) 351-3655 or

French international student Alexia Raudier attended three other American universities before finding her place at Shawnee State University.

As a first-generation college student, I had to face a totally new world, having no knowledge of being in higher education and being from another country, I was facing an extra challenge with the language barrier,” she said.

In her senior year, she joined the “I Am First Gen” program hoping to find assistance in applying to graduate school. Her mentor helped her identify connections within her target graduate school as well as find opportunities for potential job and internships.

“In three weeks, my professional network expanded so much because of my mentor,” she said. “I now have so many contacts that I wouldn’t have been able to get on my own.”

Graduates of the “I Am First Gen” program receive a cord to signify their accomplishments in completing their four-year degree.
