Pre-Lab-Student-Leaning-Against-Shelves

In 2015–2017, 65% of Shawnee State’s pre-med graduates ended up attending either medical, veterinarian, or some other professional school. Of the remaining graduates: 18% entered directly into the workforce, 6% went to graduate school, and a further 6% pursued a second baccalaureate program.

If you are interested in pursuing a professional degree in medicine, veterinary medicine, chiropractic, dentistry, optometry, or other medically related areas, our Bachelor of Science in Biology, Biomedical sciences track will help get you there.

Our degree program contains upper-level anatomy and microbiology courses which are medically focused. Among these are a cadaver based Advanced Human Anatomy course, a Diagnostic Microbiology class, Neuroanatomy, and Immunology.

Pre-medical students from Shawnee State have gone on to become:

  • Doctors
  • Dentists
  • Chiropractors
  • Optometrists
  • Veterinarians
  • Biomedical Researchers

If you have any questions about our pre-med program, or medical school requirements, please feel free to email Dr. Eugene Burns: eburns@shawnee.edu, Professor of Biology.

We invite you to learn more about our program's requirements by visiting the BS Biology (Biomedical sciences) page.

Pre-Pharmacy Studies

Pre-Med-Students-Around-Lab-Table

Shawnee State has an excellent track record of sending its graduates to pharmacy school. If you plan to apply for admission to pharmacy school you are strongly encouraged to declare our BS Chemistry (pre-pharmacy track) degree program. This will provide you with all the common pre-requisite courses for pharmacy school admission, along with a strong chemistry background. In addition, there are plenty of free elective hours that allows you to pursue coursework in biology, a second major, or one or more minors.

Students pursuing our Chemistry program have been successfully admitted to pharmacy schools such as:

  • Marshall University
  • The Ohio State University
  • University of Cincinnati
  • University of Charleston

If you have any questions about our pre-pharmacy curriculum, or pharmacy school requirements, please feel free to email Dr. Derek Jones, djones@shawnee.edu, Associate Professor of Chemistry.

We invite you to learn more about our program's requirements by visiting the BS Chemistry page.

Marshall University School of Pharmacy

We have a Memorandum of Understanding (PDF) with Marshall University School of Pharmacy (MUSOP) guaranteeing preferential consideration to students who meet certain requirements while at Shawnee State. Please read the document, and ask your adviser if you have any questions.

We are also in the process of working with MUSOP to develop a 3+1 program. This would allow you to take the first three years of coursework at Shawnee State, and after completion of one year of coursework at MUSOP, you would earn your BS in Chemistry at Shawnee. Stay tuned!
