The Radiologic Technology curriculum prepares students for careers as radiographers, who work under the supervision of medical radiologists or physicians in hospital radiology departments. Radiologic Technologists are in high demand nationwide as the healthcare system continues to expand and the need for diagnostic imaging grows. Graduates of the Radiologic Technology program are prepared to enter the workforce immediately after passing the national certification exam.
The curriculum spans six semesters. The first year provides mathematics, basic science, general education courses, specialized courses in radiography, and clinical education. The second year consists of additional clinical education scheduled in affiliated medical centers along with advanced radiologic technology courses.
Radiologic Technology coursework is delivered through synchronous distance education, meaning students attend live, scheduled classes together in real time.
Students can participate in didactic learning in three ways:
- Shawnee State University – Portsmouth, Ohio
- Adena PACCAR Medical Education Center – Chillicothe, Ohio
- Online through Blackboard
Both the Portsmouth and Chillicothe locations provide on-site laboratory instruction, allowing students to complete lab experiences conveniently closer to home. Applicants may indicate a preferred lab location on the program application; however, preferred placement is not guaranteed.
Clinical education is a core component of the Radiologic Technology program. Through placements in affiliated hospital radiology departments, students apply what they have learned in the classroom to real patient-care situations. During clinical rotations, students assist in caring for sick and injured patients while performing a wide range of radiographic examinations. These hands-on experiences are essential in developing the skills, confidence, and professional behaviors required of a competent radiologic technologist.
Upon satisfactory completion of the course requirements, students are awarded the Associate in Applied Science and are eligible to apply for examination by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
