Shawnee State University’s Honors Program offers an opportunity for high-achieving students to make the most out of their undergraduate experience. Dr. Jennifer Scott, SSU’s Associate Professor of English & Humanities, serves as the director of the program.

“We offer individualized learning experiences and a community of students and faculty who are committed to education as personal and professional development,” said Dr. Scott. “Students who participate in the Honors Program get special opportunities not otherwise accessible to undergraduate students.”

Throughout the program, students are able to connect one-on-one with faculty members and receive opportunities for experiential learning. Students in the program receive priority registration each semester and a specialized honors curriculum.

“The Honors Program has given me the opportunity to work directly with some of Shawnee’s best and brightest students,” said Dr. Scott. “They are smart, but I also find them to be so funny and creative, and they have such a wide range of talents. It’s really a delight to work with them in the program.”

New, current, and transfer students at SSU are all eligible to apply for admission to the Honors Program. To apply, students should submit a personal statement indicating their interest in the Honors Program, two samples of completed works showcasing their ability to succeed in the program, and two references. The online application can be found at shawnee.edu/honors.

“Students will get to work one-on-one with faculty mentors, take a specialized version of the first-year experience course, and earn up to $1,000 in financial support for experiential learning,” said Dr. Scott. “Students also have a built-in community on campus through the Honors Program.”
