For Ryleigh Meeker, a senior from Wheelersburg, Ohio, the Online Health Science program at Shawnee State University offered the perfect balance between flexibility and purpose.
“I’m earning my bachelor's degree in Health Sciences to complete my prerequisites for dental school,” she said.
“I’m doing this program to learn more about the healthcare business side of things. When I become a dentist, I'll need to know how to run my own business, manage finances and understand how different healthcare facilities operate.”

Meeker explained that her interest in healthcare has been lifelong.
“I always knew I wanted to do something within the health field,” she said. “I wanted a career that would let me make my family a priority later in life.”

Designed for flexibility, the bachelor’s degree in Health Science can be completed in approximately 42 months, with 7-week courses that allow students to maintain momentum while balancing other commitments. After trying out a few different majors, Meeker said she’s found her fit.
“I’ve switched my major three times, but the Health Science program feels right for me,” she said. “I’m still taking the classes I need for dental school, but I’m also learning the broader healthcare aspects that will help me in the future.”
Meeker advises future students to put the effort into their studies and the degree will be worthwhile.
“It’s worth it if you’re willing to put in the time and effort,” she said. “You’ll learn a lot, and a Health Science degree opens so many doors. It’s a great steppingstone into other opportunities—and the demand in this field is definitely there.”
