The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician is a non-credit certificate program. The Focus of this course is patient assessment, shock and fluid therapy, use of a manual defibrillator, and limited pharmacological intervention. It consists of 96 didactic hours, 48 lab hours, 60 field experience hours for a total of 244 hours.

Student must be an Ohio EMT prior to enrollment in AEMT program. After successful completion of ALL portions of this course, students will be permitted to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Cognitive Exam for Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT). Success requires completion of a Cognitive Psychomotor Exam as established by the Ohio Department of Public Safety/Division of EMS.

Mandatory Orientation

All students will be required to attend a mandatory orientation at Shawnee State University, Room 161 in the Health Sciences Building on April 9, 2026 at 5:30 pm. Please bring your driver’s license and social security number. 

Admission Requirements

Minimum of 18 years of age; High School Seniors who are 17 years of age can take the course, however, must be 18 and out of High School to sit for the certification test.

All admission requirements must be uploaded to the online class portal two weeks prior to the start of the class. Links and demonstration of the class portal will be given at the Mandatory Orientation Session on April 9.

  • Completed Pre-Entrance Medical Record with recent TB, Tetanus (DTAP), Hepatitis B, and MMR Vaccines.

  • ODPS Dementia Training
  • ODPS Ohio Trauma Triage
  • ODPS Rescue Task Force Awareness
  • Signed payment agreement
  • Signed criminal history statement
  • Basic Life Support Certification
  • State Basic EMT Certificate
  • Completion of EMS Platinum Assessment
  • Two letters of recommendation, one from your squad supervisor

After all documents are submitted, students will be scheduled for an interview with program director.

Program Cost

Cost of Course: $3,200.00

Full Payment of $3,200.00 is due prior to the start of class.

Program Success

To remain in good standing during the Advanced EMT program, students must maintain a grade point average of 2.0 in all coursework needed to meet the requirements of the course syllabus.

Upon completing the course requirements, students can sit for the Advanced National Registry Exam. Upon successfully completing the exam, the student will receive Ohio and National Registry certification as an Advanced EMT. 

Program Outcomes

The most recent positive placement rate for AEMT graduates was 100%. Positive placement is defined by State of Ohio license requirements and is measured by the completion rate of the program.
