Two fraternities at Shawnee State University are excited and preparing to make the most of rush week this fall. Tau Kappa Epsilon and Phi Mu Delta are making plans for an engaging way to meet those interested in joining their organization.

“Rush is a week or two of events on and off campus for current members to meet potential new members,” Tau Kappa Epsilon’s president, Blake Snyder, said. “During this time, you will get to know each other and see if it is truly a good match for both the potential new member and the fraternity.”

Both fraternities will kick off the Rush process October 5 with a planned virtual event and will continue through October 9.

Snyder described a fraternity as “a place for men to explore community involvement, leadership opportunities that translate to the real world, and national networking that will last a lifetime.”

Shawnee presents welcoming opportunities for the fraternities to provide outreach and support. Tau Kappa Epsilon and Phi Mu Delta both raise money throughout the semester for their organization, St. Jude.

The process of holding fundraisers and doing charitable work also creates many new memories for the fraternity members.

“A main experience that you get with Greek life is a brotherhood that wants to see you strive in life and will be there for you when you need them,” Phi Mu Delta President Tyler Horsley said.

“You are also able to meet new people through various conferences and leadership trips that are in your same chapter. You gain leadership experience that will help better yourself for any career you are pursuing.”

Snyder and Horsley said their fraternities were originally planning as many in-person recruitment events as possible within state and local health guidelines. However, with the Sept. 24 risk level change to “red” for Scioto County, the groups are adjusting the schedule for all-virtual events.
