The award will support the purchase and installation of state-of-the-art laboratory and instructional equipment, curriculum modernization, and the development of new academic and professional training opportunities. Planned additions include new certificate offerings, an associate of applied science degree, and expanded professional development designed to meet workforce needs.

"Employers in our region depend on Shawnee State to provide the highly skilled workforce they need to thrive,” said SSU President Eric Andrew Braun. “This investment benefits students, families, our industry partners, and the Appalachian communities we serve.”

Launched in 2018 as one of three Bachelor of Science in chemistry tracks, the industrial chemistry program was designed to prepare students for direct entry into the workforce after graduation, without requiring graduate school. With this funding, the university will further align the program with the needs of regional employers seeking skilled chemistry professionals.

The funding will provide dedicated staffing to strengthen partnerships with regional employers, increase internship and job placement opportunities, and ensure the curriculum remains aligned with workforce demands.

By expanding workforce-focused chemistry education and deepening industry collaboration, Shawnee State continues its commitment to supporting economic growth and workforce development in the region.
