A group of Shawnee State University student leaders recently traveled to Atlanta to attend the National Conference on Student Life (NCSL) with support from the Campus Community Grant, gaining valuable leadership skills, professional insight and networking opportunities.
The National Conference on Student Life provides college students with tools to succeed on campus and in their future careers. The conference featured keynote speakers, career-boosting workshops and networking opportunities for students to connect with peers and professionals from across the country.
“NCSL is a great place to network and learn new ways of thinking about leadership,” said Mason Goddard, President of the Shawnee State University Student Government Association (SGA). “They not only want you to succeed but also ensure that you enjoy your journey.”
Students returned to campus energized and inspired. Athea Hillman, Vice President of the Shawnee State University Student Government Association, reflected on hearing from experienced leaders.
“The NCSL was an amazing opportunity to hear the perspective of leaders who have been in our shoes,” Hillman said. “All the speakers were enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge and helping us learn the tools to succeed. I feel empowered as Vice President of SGA to lead from a place of confidence, compassion and the capability to effect change at SSU.”
For many students, the conference also offered opportunities to build connections beyond Shawnee State. Matthew Baker highlighted the professional and personal growth gained through the experience.
“It provided me with the opportunity to learn more about skills that will benefit me on campus and in my future career,” Baker said. “It encouraged me to network with others from diverse areas whom I might not have met otherwise.”
