At the event, SSU President Eric Andrew Braun thanked those in attendance as well as those supporters that made gifts towards the scholarship fund. During his remarks, Braun recognized this milestone year, noting that it marks the 40th anniversary of Shawnee State University. He reflected on the institution’s evolution, from its beginnings as a technical school to a community college, and ultimately to a university, highlighting its longstanding role in serving the region and adapting to meet workforce and educational needs.

Braun also introduced Tyler Walters, the recently appointed Chief Advancement Officer. He also emphasized SSU’s continued commitment to preparing students for success in the workforce and shared updates on major developments in athletics, including the introduction of SSU Football Coach Mark Snyder.

"The 2026 SSU President’s Gala was a record‑breaking success in every measure, and we are thrilled by the incredible support shown for our students," SSU Foundation Executive Director Aimee Welch said. "The Friends of Shawnee State Scholarship is a vitally important tool in ensuring access to a top‑notch education, and support of the Gala helps ensure these awards continue in the year ahead. We are profoundly grateful to our donors for their engagement, generosity, and commitment to the success of Shawnee State students."

The Friends of Shawnee State Scholarship fund was established in 2002 to provide additional tuition assistance to those students in need. In the past five years, the scholarship fund has been expanded to impact more students and their ability to attend college through increased fundraising initiatives.
