Dr. Eugene Burns has had the privilege of teaching biology to numerous students since 1999. As director of the Biomedical Sciences and Pre-Med programs, he has watched many reach their full potential by becoming doctors.

"Our Bachelor of Science in Biology has three different tracks: biology, organismal (animal) biology and biomedical sciences," Burns said. "We have all the requirements students need for medical or professional school built into the biomedical sciences track."

Along with the required courses for acceptance into medical schools, Shawnee State offers upper-level courses that enhance students’ knowledge when they begin medical school. Unlike many universities, Shawnee offers an advanced human anatomy course to undergraduate students. Here, students have the opportunity to dissect cadavers, an experience normally offered only to graduate or medical students.

"Our upper-level biomedical courses include hands-on experience for students in labs and incorporate case studies and medically focused content," Burns said.

Although many do not think of Shawnee State as a research school, a lot of research is being performed. Students are heavily involved in research on campus with faculty. Because there are no graduate students in the program, undergraduate students have more opportunities to gain research experience.

Shawnee offers early assurance programs into medical and professional schools with Ohio University’s Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, School of Pharmacy, School of Dental Medicine and School of Podiatric Medicine. Students may apply to Shawnee State’s undergraduate program and to medical or professional school at the same time through the early assurance program.

"Don’t take Shawnee for granted just because it is close to home," Burns said. "Our students get into medical schools all over the country. They graduate and do very well as doctors. If you are interested in the program, I encourage you to visit the campus. Pre-Med Day is the perfect opportunity!" Pre-Med Day is Friday, Dec. 12.
