Knowing she is pursuing an academically-challenging degree program, Corrine Woods is excited to be in the Pre-Med program at Shawnee State University. She originally debated between becoming a veterinarian or a doctor before ultimately deciding to work towards a career as a physician.

“You just have to seize the moment, and I took it,” she said on making her decision.

A Chillicothe, Ohio native, SSU was always the first choice for Woods to pursue her future career. Being at a smaller university, she has been able to develop better relationships with her professors in the classroom.

“It makes the learning experience more personal,” she said.

Balancing a busy class schedule, Woods also stays busy involved in Student Life. She is the Vice President of the Pre-Med Club as well as the Head Chair of Fundraising for Theta Phi Alpha. She is also part of the Circle K International club and the treasurer for the Tri-Beta Honor Society. Being able to be active on campus while pursuing her degree is important to Woods.

“It’s challenging, but it’s also very supportive,” she said.

SSU’s Pre-Med track in the Biomedical Sciences degree program gives students hands on experiences that sets them up for success in medical school. Students build a strong foundation in biology, develop scientific research skills, and gain hands-on experience they won’t find in other undergraduate programs – like the advanced human anatomy course where students can participate in a human cadaver dissection lab. The program also offers an Early Assurance Program for qualifying incoming students who can receive conditional acceptance to the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine before starting their undergraduate degree.
