Campus Life

March 10, 2021

Shawnee State University’s Student Programming Board (SPB) hosts a range of activities on campus for students to have fun, enjoy a break from studying, and spend time with friends. Even with event restrictions for the past year, SPB members have been working hard to bring fun and creative events to campus to keep students engaged while staying healthy and safe.

SPB members host “Paint a Pot” in Fall 2020 for student to choose and decorate their own succulent pot before picking out a plant to take home with them.

Typically, SPB can be seen across campus almost every day of the semester hosting a new event for students. They host events such as bonfires, dances, crafting, gaming tournaments, and even the university’s highly popular Bingo night – there’s always something for all students.

“SPB’s goal on campus is to make sure everyone has something fun and exciting to do,” Marlita Cadogan, SSU’s Coordinator of Student Life and Diversity & Inclusion said.

Cadogan also serves as SPB’s advisor on campus and works with members of SPB to complete programming, coordinating, and advertising of all events. The executive board is made up of 12 current SSU students who apply and interview for the position, while the general board is open to all SSU students interested in helping SPB plan and execute events. Different areas within SPB includes positions designated to plan for certain days of the week, those to promote educational and cultural events, and those taking the lead on Special Events, such as Homecoming or Springfest.

“Unfortunately, COVID-19 has prevented us from having the typical in-person activities last fall and this spring, but we developed some pretty awesome events anyway – especially during Homecoming Week,” Cadogan said.

In place of SSU’s traditional Homecoming Weekend this past fall, SPB members worked with university organizations to present “Stay at HOMEcoming” – a week-long virtual celebration to engage students, alumni, and the community. Among their events, SPB hosted a Trivia Night, Spirit Day, activities for Craft Night, and a Pajama Jam – a virtual Homecoming Dance held through Zoom where students had the opportunity to win prizes all night long.

SPB is always looking for new members and ideas to keep engaging students in new and meaningful ways through their campus events.

“Joining the Student Programming Board is a great way to meet people who are different than you,” Cadogan said. “I also find that students are gaining professional experience, and members are able to put this experience on their resumes. It’s a ton of fun getting to connect and network because it is always an event in which fun and entertainment is the goal.”
