Dr. Lincoln Pettaway

February 24, 2023

Starting at Shawnee State University as an adjunct faculty member last semester, Dr. Lincoln Pettaway was hired as a management professor within the C.H. Lute School of Business at the start of Spring 2023. Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Pettaway received his bachelor’s degree in Film & Communication from the University of Rochester, a master’s degree in Organizational Learning from Barry University, and his Ph.D in Management & Accounting from Cleveland State University. While still new to this area, he already feels SSU is his home.

“I’m super excited about this area and community,” said Dr. Pettaway. “I have family here with indigenous roots. When I take a look around, I think, ‘my family is from here too’, and we’re proud! I just want to wrap this place around me because it is so beautiful.”

In addition to teaching courses in Business Ethics, Production & Operations Management, and International Business, Dr. Pettaway is looking forward to making connections with his students through advising as well as promoting research and community engagement projects within his classroom. One particular project that excites him is the possibility of working with students to develop an interface for nurses to monitor patient vitals in small amounts of time, allowing health care professionals the ability to gain a better grasp of their patient’s status quicker.

Wanting to spark a passion in his students, Dr. Pettaway also desires to support and be there for his students as they manage different levels of stress and mental health wellbeing throughout their education at SSU. Having experienced harshly competitive academic environments in his past, he wants to focus on helping students find joy in learning and discovering worthwhile topics for their future careers.

“What I’m trying to figure out is how to share information that students find useful,” he said. “This is always at the forefront of my mind when I’m teaching. I want students to say ‘this is really interesting and I’m going to use it.’ It’s practical, but I also incorporate theoretical ideas so that students can get familiar with their thought-processes and problem-solving skills as opposed to the limits that are put in front of them.”

To his new students, Dr. Pettaway encourages them to take time to appreciate the opportunity they have to pursue a college education.

“I want students to recognize that not everybody gets to go somewhere to spend four years just to focus on learning,” said Dr. Pettaway. “You get what you put into it.”
