For Elisha Andre, a junior from West Portsmouth, Ohio, numbers have always been fun and challenging. But at Shawnee State University, she has discovered that math is about much more than equations—it is about problem-solving, creativity, and opening doors to countless career paths.
“I have always been interested in math because I enjoy problem-solving,” Elisha said. “I thrive on the challenge of puzzling out a difficult problem. The great thing about math is that there is little gray area, and the solution is either right or wrong.”
The Mathematical Sciences program at Shawnee State University gives students a strong foundation in mathematics while also emphasizing logic, reasoning and analytical thinking — skills that are valuable in nearly every profession. Students can tailor their studies toward teaching, research or applied fields such as computer science, engineering or finance.
Program faculty work closely with students to help them reach their academic and career goals.
“The Mathematical Sciences faculty have been exceptional,” Elisha said. “They are very supportive and are very dedicated to helping me and my fellow classmates succeed. They are always willing to go out of their way to offer any assistance needed.”
Elisha also appreciates the close-knit community at Shawnee. “Not only has the faculty supported me in my classes, but they have also helped me to connect to many valuable opportunities beyond the classroom,” she said.
Graduates of the program have gone on to careers in education, technology and business or have continued into graduate school for advanced study. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects strong growth in mathematics-related careers, especially in data science and analytics.
For students who enjoy solving puzzles and tackling challenges, Elisha says the Mathematical Sciences program is the perfect fit:
“My advice to anyone pursuing a degree in mathematics is to stay curious, persevere, and don’t be afraid to ask questions,” she said. “Math can be challenging, but it’s also so rewarding when you keep fighting for that right answer and finally succeed.”
