Program Overview
Shawnee State University is proud to offer an applied Master of Business Administration degree with a focus on economic development, entrepreneurship, and leadership in Appalachia. The Master of Business Administration consists of 30 hours of coursework (10 classes) and is infused with references, case studies, and examples specific to Appalachia. Students will have opportunities for significant experiential learning and application of concepts, theories, and methods.
Continuation and Completion Requirements
Students are expected to earn a grade of “B” or better in all courses throughout the curriculum. If a student does not complete all the courses they have enrolled in during a course term—that is, if they receive an Incomplete grade in one or more courses—they must satisfactorily complete the work before the following course term begins.
Students who do not meet these criteria must meet (face-to-face, virtually, or via telephone) with the MBA Program Director to discuss their future in the program. Readmission is granted at the discretion of the MBA Program Director.
Required Courses (Core)
Students in the MBA program are required to take the following nine courses (27 semester hours total). These courses do not have any prerequisites and may be taken in any order. A list of courses and the semesters in which they are offered can be found in MBA Courses and Schedule.

Applied Capstone Requirement
During your last academic term, and after successfully completing at least 24 semester hours, you will need to complete a capstone experience. Currently, there are two options:
- BUMG6900: Applied Capstone Experience: Portfolio - 3 credits
- BUMG6995: Applied Capstone Experience: Internship - 3 credits
Students must choose 3 credits between the two options.
For course descriptions and additional information, see the Shawnee State University Catalog.
Both options require a student to complete two on-line assessments of student learning and program effectiveness. The first will be an objective assessment of the MBA Program Intended Student Learning Outcomes (PISLOs), that is given in business schools internationally. The score for this assessment will count for 10% of the capstone course grade. The objective assessment may contain questions for topics and specific subjects that were not covered in the MBA course work. The score used for course grading will be adjusted so that students will only be accountable for material covered in the coursework. The second ungraded but required assessment will be a survey that will be used to assess the Broad-Based Student Learning Goals and the Broad-Based Operational Goals.
Choosing the Portfolio or Internship
The two capstone options are designed for students with different goals and needs. You must work with your advisor to select the pathway that is best for you after you have completed 17 or more hours. Your selection with details must be submitted 60 calendar days BEFORE the beginning of the term you are planning to complete the requirement and approved by your advisor and the MBA Program Director.
