This fall Shawnee State University honored Ralph Wisniewski, a mentor in the Botany department and longtime friend of the University, with a tree dedicated in his memory.

The black oak, planted in front of Massie Hall, is now one of hundreds of trees that make up the Deal Arboretum. Wisniewski was an early educator, teaching Botany on the campus before it was Shawnee State and created a legacy that still impacts the department today.

Julia Wisniewski says her husband, who was originally from northern Ohio, loved the area because of the vast forests and wooden areas and enjoyed teaching not just his students, but also his friends and family about the plants and trees in southern Ohio.

“I am very grateful to have this organized to honor Ralph, he was dedicated to education, and his students, many who became lifelong friends. This tree is wonderful tribute to not only his love of this area, but the importance of education.”

The tree is planted in front of Massie Hall, where Wisniewski spent much of his time mentoring students.
