Shawnee State University has announced a new Experiential Learning Requirement (ELR) for undergraduate students, providing every student with the opportunity to connect classroom learning to real-world experience before graduation.
Starting with students entering in fall 2026, all new undergraduate students will be required to complete at least one approved hands-on experience. Approved experiences include internships, co-ops, undergraduate research, service learning, study abroad, clinical or field experiences, creative or entrepreneurial projects, and other activities aligned with academic goals.
Shawnee State University is among the first universities in Ohio to require all degree-seeking students to complete an experiential learning requirement before graduation. The ELR is designed to strengthen student success, critical thinking and employability, helping graduates enter the workforce with practical experience, demonstrated skills, and a stronger résumé.

The Office of Career Services and the Office of Personal and Professional Development at Shawnee State University will support students throughout the experiential learning process. Career Services will assist with internships, résumé development, mock interviews and employer networking. Personal and Professional Development will coordinate leadership training, mentorship, and campus engagement opportunities.
Students are encouraged to begin planning experiential learning early in their academic careers. Career Services is available to help students incorporate experiential learning goals into their academic plans.
