Your first step towards law school could be here at Shawnee State University. Several students have started their path toward a legal career with a Shawnee State degree. Recently the Pre-Law Club partnered with the Ohio State Bar Association so students could learn more about various forms of law, and the law school experience.

Shawnee State University Senior Walker Pannell asks attorney Robert Trujillo questions about his career and law school experience. Pannell is a member of the SSU Pre-Law Club.
Attorneys from seven legal fields traveled to campus to meet with students and offer an in-depth view into their careers.
Shawnee State senior Walker Pannell plans to attend law school after graduation.
“I think it was great to get different perspectives, not just on different types of law, but hearing about everyone’s different paths to law school and their chosen careers.”
Amy Milam with the Ohio State Bar Association says events like these are important to growing the field of law, especially in this area. In Ohio, counties with fewer than one lawyer per 1,500 residents are considered an underserved area. The majority of southeast Ohio is among the 58 counties considered underserved for the legal profession.
“These events can help the region in the long term by supporting students with ties to the region who have an interest in law, as they may be more likely to return to the region to practice after law school. As a profession, we want to do everything we can to support these students’ career journeys and broaden their understanding of the opportunities available to them.”

Junior Allison Causey says law school wasn’t something she had considered until she was encouraged by one of her professors, and events like this are helpful in exploring her future career.
“I went into the event thinking I wanted to go into a certain type of law, but this opportunity showed potentially more interesting paths. Today reminded me of the importance of stepping out of your comfort to try new things. You don’t know what you don’t know, so don’t be afraid to find out.”
