What is the Experiential Learning Requirement?
The Experiential Learning Requirement (ELR) is a mandatory graduation component designed to boost student success, critical thinking, and employability. Students complete at least one approved hands-on endeavor backed by critical reflection for each degree level pursued (i.e. associate’s and bachelor’s).
Why did SSU implement this requirement?
Employers value real-world experience. The ELR ensures that every Shawnee State graduate enters the job market with a competitive resume, verified skills, and practical industry confidence. Shawnee state is among the first universities in Ohio to implement such a requirement for all degree-seeking students.
When should students complete their ELR?
Most students complete the actual experience during their sophomore year (for associate’s degrees), or junior or senior year, depending on their specific major and chosen pathway. If the ELR is required in the degree program, the student’s academic advisor will assist in that planning.
Ways to Fulfil the Requirement
Students can customize their experience through seven distinct pathways:
Internships & Co-ops: Secure paid or credit-bearing industry roles.
Study Abroad: Gain global perspectives through international travel.
Service Learning: Give back through structured community impact projects.
Undergraduate Research: Conduct scientific or academic research with faculty mentors.
Clinical & Field Experiences: Complete hands-on healthcare rotations or educational field placements.
Creative & Entrepreneurial Projects: Build independent portfolios, launch business ideas, or showcase artwork.
Other Approved Activities: Customizable endeavors tailored to a student's unique academic goals
Frequently Asked Questions
Only if the work aligns directly with their academic major, includes new learning objectives, and is officially approved by their department faculty advisor and department chair/school director before starting.
No. Most students fulfill the requirement through standard, credit-bearing courses already built into their degree tracks, such as required clinicals, practicums, or senior capstones.
No. The experience is not intended to extend the student’s time toward degree or incur additional expense.
No. The ELR is intentionally woven into many existing degree pathways so that it complements a student's academic timeline without adding extra semesters
