Management (Industrial) Accounting

The management accountant is trained to determine the financial consequences of management decisions. The reports and analyses of the management accountant are essential ingredients of most management decisions about finance, investments, and pricing policies. More than anyone else on the management team, the management accountant participates in virtually every phase of the business problem solving and decision making process. Because of the accountant's role in this process, he or she has many times advanced to a top management position within the company.

Governmental Accounting

All organizations need accounting information, and government and other non-profit organizations are no exception. The federal government hires accountants in most of its agencies. Three prominent agencies are the Internal Revenue Service, the General Accounting Office, and the Defense Contract Audit Agency. State and local government units hire accountants in their tax divisions and in general accounting functions. Schools and hospitals are major users of accounting services. Many opportunities exist for those interested in governmental accounting.

Public Accounting and the CPA

For the protection of the public, the CPA is expected to possess certain professional qualifications. The Uniform CPA Examination measures the technical competency, the exercise of good judgment, and the understanding of professional responsibility of each man or woman who chooses this career in accounting. The public accountant is a true independent professional person with the stature of a doctor of lawyer. In public accounting many opportunities exist for professional growth, whether you practice as a sole practitioner or as part of a larger firm.
