The BS Natural Sciences, Biology concentration degree will provide students with a solid foundation in the biological sciences while allowing additional flexibility of specializations to include chemistry, geology, physics, or mathematics, in order to satisfy a spectrum of opportunities post-graduation; be they professional, medical, or graduate school, or immediate entry into the scientific workforce of tomorrow.

Our BS Natural Sciences with a concentration in biology degree provides students with both a depth in biology and a breadth in the Natural Sciences. As part of the program, students take 27 hours of biology coursework and 24 hours of courses in chemistry, geology, physics, and mathematics.

Get Involved

We have several active biology clubs within the department that invite speakers to campus, get involved with the community, and organize social activities.
Our Tri-Beta Club is the Xi Upsilon chapter of the βββ National Biological Honor Society. They promote research and research activities within the department.
The SSU Environmental Club promotes environmental awareness to increase participation in environmental affairs.

Nine highly-qualified faculty members. Eight with Ph.D.'s in biology, one with an M.S. in biology.
Undergraduate research opportunities every semester.
Upper-division classes are small, with class sizes typically around 10 – 15 students.
Unique ability to tailor a biology degree with other scientific and mathematical interests.
A teaching licensure option is available with our BS Natural Sciences degree
Graduates have been admitted to graduate, medical, and pharmacy schools at: Graduates have been admitted to graduate programs at Kent State University, Unity College, Marshall University, Ohio University, and The Ohio State University.
Field-based research opportunities are available for students, including a two-week research trip to Costa-Rica that occurs during Spring/Summer.
