At Shawnee State University, we believe that every student deserves an opportunity to receive a college education — and we have an admission process that provides that opportunity while giving you the best chance of successfully earning your degree.

Shawnee State University is open to all students who have completed a high school education. While we have an open admission policy, we provide different paths toward earning your degree, depending on your goals and your level of college-readiness, based on your ACT or college placement scores.

You will be attending college for the first time? Congratulations and welcome.

We want to make your transition to college a smooth one - and we want you to be successful in reaching your education goals. Please tell us a little more about yourself so we may tailor your path to success. 

I am under 21 and have an ACT score of 18 or higher in Math & English or an SAT score of 460 or higher in Verbal & 510 or higher in Math. 

Your scores indicate that you are prepared for college-level coursework.

You will be admitted directly into your chosen major (with the exception of health science majors that have additional criteria)

You will also receive a letter of acceptance from the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, Dean of the College of Professional Studies, or the Dean of the University College, depending on your chosen field of study.

I am under 21 and have an ACT score BELOW 18 in Math & English or an SAT score of BELOW 460  in Verbal & below 510 in Math. 

Your scores indicate that you would benefit from extra support and academic coursework aimed at helping you succeed in college.

You will be admitted to Bridge to Success, part of the University College, and enrolled in a two-year, associate degree program. This associate degree in general studies can serve as a launching pad into a four-year bachelor's degree – or you may transfer from the Student Success Curriculum into a two-year or four-year program of your choice at any time once you have successfully completed the developmental coursework required in the program.

After we receive your application, you will receive a letter of acceptance from the Office of Admission with information about attending orientation, registering for classes, and how to access MySSU – your official student portal to access important information such as financial aid notices and account information.

You will also receive a letter of acceptance from the Dean of the University College providing more details about the Student Success Curriculum and how it can help you meet your educational goals.

I am over 21 with Placement Test Scores placing me in Math Level 2 and Reading & English 1101 (placement testing provided through the SSU Success Center).
