Counseling and Psychological Services

It is not uncommon in the aftermath of service in a combat theater to experience some psychological and social distress as well as difficulty in readjusting to civilian life. Stress reactions are experienced by almost everyone exposed to abnormally intense amounts of stress such as those encountered in a war zone. A delayed stress reaction may occur after several months, making the return home difficult. 

Some of the most common symptoms a veteran might experience are:

  • Re-experiencing the trauma through intrusive thoughts, nightmares, or flashbacks

  • Avoidance of stimuli that serve as reminders to the war zone experiences, repressing feelings, avoiding others, and detaching oneself from family and friends

  • Manifesting increased arousal symptoms such as inability to sleep, hypervigilence, startle response and anger outbursts

Counseling and Psychological Services offers a range of confidential services to assist veterans in their readjustment. These include assessments and evaluations, individual counseling, relaxation/stress management training and substance abuse counseling. In addition, Counseling and Psychological Services serves as a liaison with government agencies and veteran’s organizations that can assist the veteran. Counseling and Psychological Services will provide information on benefits and services veterans are eligible for and make the necessary referrals for health care services, assistance with obtaining benefits and work with their service representatives who will assist them on their service connection claims. Referral services to veteran programs off-campus is also available. 

Counseling and Psychological Services is located on the second floor of the University Center. The Office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and evenings by appointment. Students are encouraged to schedule an appointment by calling 740-351-3608. However, every attempt will be made to accommodate students on a walk-in basis. All services provided by the Office are confidential and free of charge.

Health Clinic

Students enrolled for one (1) credit hour or more may receive medical care through the Health Clinic during the semester they are enrolled. A student does not have to participate in the University insurance plan to receive medical services.

Services available include primary medical care; i.e., treatment of colds, sore throats, infections, sports physicals, sexual health issues, minor sprains and strains, prescriptions, allergy injections and other related services.

If the Health Clinic believes that you are in need of a specialist’s care, you will be referred outside the Clinic as quickly as possible and at a time that is convenient for you.

The Health Clinic is a walk-in clinic and is open Monday-Friday from 10:00 am to 3 pm during the fall and spring semesters. It is closed during the summer semester, on holidays and other times when the University is not holding classes. It is located in the James A. Rhodes Center, first floor, Room 118. Disability Services

Disability Services advocates a barrier free campus and provides a variety of support services to students with special needs; such as learning disabled, suffering from traumatic brain injury (TBI) and physically challenged, through classroom accommodations, coordinating technical assistance to improve learning and the removal of structural barriers. By documenting each student’s disability, their capacity to learn and prior classroom needs, proper accommodation requests are forwarded to their faculty members.

Disability Services also acts a the liaison between the student and the sponsoring agency such as the Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation, VA, etc. to ensure that the student’s specific needs are met.
