Upward Bound Math Sciences

Upward Bound Math Science Center

The Upward Bound Math Science Program is designed to provide high school students in Appalachian Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia with an exciting learning experience in the math and science fields. The Upward Bound Math Science Center at Shawnee State University provides academic, social, recreational, cultural and counseling services in order to generate the skills, motivation, and self-confidence necessary for students to succeed in a university math or science program.

The program is designed to expand the students' math and science abilities, and help prepare them for a math or science program at the university level. This is accomplished in two ways.

During the summer, students will be part of a six-week, residential program at Shawnee State University. While living on campus they will be taking intensive classes in the math and science areas, along with enrichment courses. They will also be involved in social and recreational activities, and have the opportunity to travel to interesting places. Students will get to know what college life is like through all of these different components.

During the academic year professors will send assignments via phone and Internet that students will complete. There will be opportunities for the students to participate in weekend activities at times throughout the year.

The Upward Bound Math Science program (UBMS) is a joint project of Shawnee State University (SSU) and the U.S. Department of Education. UBMS at SSU is one of 124 similar math and science programs in the nation. The purpose of the program is two-fold:

  1. To increase high school students' skills in math and science; and,
  2. To encourage them to prepare for professional careers in math and science.
