New and Returning Students are "Getting IT Going"

New and Returning Students "Getting IT Going"

Connecting to the campus Network and SSUnet is an important step for students as they settle into their new student residence. As new and returning students moved into Shawnee State University student housing for the new academic year, UIS was on hand to help students "Connect IT".

As a part of the Week of Welcome hosted by Student Activities, UIS offered the annual "Getting IT Going" sessions where students were invited to bring their laptops, tablets, smart phones, or any personal mobile device for hands-on assistance in connecting to the SSU network and SSUnet WiFi on campus. In each housing unit, students were provided directions for connecting to the residential network provided by WiFi Solutions Group. For students who needed the help of an IT Technician, the "Getting IT Going" general sessions were offered by UIS.

At each "Getting IT Going" session, students were able to connect their devices directly to SSUnet and assistance was provided to establish the student's Password Reset credentials. Refreshments and a family-friendly movie were also provided so that the whole family could relax after a hard day of moving while the student worked with a UIS Technician to connect his or her device. Students who visited the "Getting IT Going" sessions were also provided a welcome gift from the UIS Department. The gift included an SSU drawstring bag, a universal device charger, and a wristband USB drive. These items were intended to help students get started using the many information technology (IT) offerings at Shawnee State University as well as provide students with a convenient way to keep the UIS Help Desk contact information readily available in case they need assistance during the school year.

Students who participated in the event were asked to complete a brief survey regarding the number of devices they brought to campus. A follow up survey is sent by email to all who attended and students are encouraged to complete this survey as well. The results of these surveys help UIS continue to improve its Technology Services available to each and every student when needed. A Microsoft Surface is awarded by random drawings to several lucky survey participants.

Students who did not attend the "Getting IT Going" sessions but would still like assistance connecting a mobile device or laptop to the campus network are invited to visit the UIS Help Desk. UIS is located in the Administration Building in room 035 and is available to help with any of your information technology needs.
