SSU Veterans Recognition Day

The Veterans Recognition Committee was formed in 1993 following the Persian Gulf War. The Committee is composed of representatives from Shawnee State University, community groups, veteran’s organizations, the Ohio Army National Guard and student veterans. The purpose of the event is aimed at acknowledging and showing our sincere appreciation for the service and sacrifice made by our area veterans. From its humble beginning in 1993 when then Speaker of the House, Vern Riffe, provided a brief keynote address, to our current day-long event which draws up to 500 members of the veteran community to campus, this event has become one of the major events on campus and in the Portsmouth area each year.
Keynote speakers have included Jan Scruggs, founder of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Rocky Bleier, former all-pro running back and decorated Vietnam veteran and Chris Noel, a Hollywood actress who left her career in the movies to serve from 1966 to 1971 in Vietnam as an Armed Forces Radio talk show hostess and entertainer. Exhibits have included the National Purple Heart Exhibit, the Ohio Mobile Vietnam Memorial and a M.A.S.H. unit with med-evac helicopters to name a just few. The 82nd and 101st Airborne Parachute teams have put on demonstrations.  The local recruiters attend as well as displays of military equipment by the local National Guard unit, Huey and Blackhawk helicopters and flyovers, all of which bring the campus and the community out to the event.
Comprehensive health screening for veterans, memorial services to honor those killed in action and presentations by Medal of Honor recipients have been conducted. Area veteran’s organizations as well as the VA attend to provide information to veterans about the benefits and services to which they are entitled. However, the centerpiece of the day’s events is always the Recognition Ceremony at noon when we take time to honor those who have served as well as those who have fallen.
We invite any student veteran who would like to join the Veterans Recognition Committee and help us in planning this annual event to please contact the Committee Chair, Dr. Michael Hughes at 740-351-3539 or stop by his office, Counseling and Psychological Services,  on the second floor of the University Center.

For information on this year's event, please visit the Counseling and Psychological Services website. Scroll to the bottom for the schedule of events.
