The Ohio South Tech Prep Consortium Shawnee State University
Our state and national economies need more highly skilled technical workers. These important, well-paying jobs will require more than a high school education, meaning that many more young Americans will need to prepare for study beyond high school, particularly for the technical programs offered at their local university. The Tech Prep Philosophy The Tech Prep philosophy is based on three main components: Applied Academics Applied academics is a non-traditional approach that focuses on core academic instruction through the use of class projects, examples from business and industry, and community service. The goal is to avoid isolated content instruction by focusing on real world application. Articulation Tech Prep at its best will eliminate delays, duplication of courses, or loss of credit, resulting in free college credit work. Faculty at secondary and post-secondary institutions work together to design curriculum that flows seamlessly. Partnerships Tech Prep requires that each of the following stakeholders be actively involved in the development and function of our programs:
The MissionTech Prep Mission To prepare students for the high skill, high demand technical careers required for an increasingly competitive global economy with an emphasis on science, technology, engineering/educators, and math/medical careers (STEM) for Ohio economic development.
Goals:
Shawnee State University Mission “Shawnee State University--the regional state university of Southern Ohio--prepares students for the changing needs of business, industry, education, and society...To enrich the lives of the community, the University provides opportunities for continuing personal and professional development, intellectual discovery, and appreciation for the creative and performing arts. As a state university, SSU fulfills Ohio’s public service expectations by meeting state priorities including the continuing education and training needs of business and industry. Shawnee State is, therefore, a willing partner in cooperative ventures with educational institutions and organizations that assist in developing the economic, educational, and cultural base of South Central Ohio.”
