Dial-Up Instructions for Windows 98 The following instructions are to be a guide to assist you in setting up a Dial-Up Network connection on your personal computer. The instructions are based on the standard Windows 98 operating system. If changes have been made to your operating system or if your operating system is not installed correctly you may run into screens that differ from these instructions.
Shawnee
State University or University Information Services do not
accept responsibility for any damage or loss of data that my
occur during the set up of the dial up service or a result of
damage or loss of data after the dial up connection is
established.
Once this
window is opened, you will need to double click on the
‘Dial-Up Networking’ icon, which will open a window that
looks similar to:
In the
“Allowed network protocols” it is only necessary to have
TCP/IP checked.
Then click
on “Specify name server addresses” and in the Primary DNS
box enter 146.85.1.50. Then
click OK on any open windows.
You may be asked to restart Windows at this point. If you are then allow the computer to restart so the settings you entered can be saved. After the restart you will need to follow the instructions in steps 1 and 2 to return to the screen displayed in step 11.
Troubleshooting
If the
computer acts as if it will connect but repeatedly asks for a
username and password, this indicates that the password you
are entering does not match the password typed into the
computers at Shawnee State.
To fix this you must bring a picture ID to UIS and the
password will be checked.
The
computer connects but no web pages will open up.
This normally indicates that the DNS was not entered in
correctly.
If there is
no dial tone then you will want to check the phone line with a
telephone to see if you are able to place calls.
If the line works with a telephone but there is still
no dial tone when attempting to dial-up you will need to check
to ensure your modem is installed and working properly. Creating A Shortcut
You can
create a short cut to the dial-up connection by following the
steps outlined below.
A.
Complete
Steps 1 and 2 in the instructions.
B.
Right
click on the SSU icon
C.
Select
Create Shortcut
D.
You
will be prompted if you want the shortcut placed on your
desktop. Click
Yes.
Long
Distance Charges
Calling
the modem bank at Shawnee State University is identical to
making a regular phone call.
It is strongly suggested that the modems are only used
when calling the modems will be considered a local call.
If you live out side the local call area, long distance
charges will accrue on your phone bill.

that may appear on the phone bill as a result of establishing
a dial up connection to the modems found at Shawnee State
