The following instructions are to be a guide to assist you in setting up a Dial-Up Network connection on your personal computer.  The instructions are based on the standard Windows 98 operating system.  If changes have been made to your operating system or if your operating system is not installed correctly you may run into screens that differ from these instructions.

  1. The first window asks you to name the connection you are making.  It is suggested that you use ‘SSU’ as that is the name used in the instructions.  You will also be able to select you modem on this screen.  Normally, the modem will be selected automatically.  After entering the name for the dial up click ‘Next’.

  1. The next window will ask you to enter the phone number of the computer you are dialing.  Here you need to enter 353-2484, the phone number is found on the page with your username and password or the number found in the picture.

  1. The next window asks you to ‘Finish’ the setting up of the dial up connection.  On this window simply click ‘Finish’.

  1. After clicking ‘Finish’, you should be taken back to the Dial Up Networking folder.  If you are not then follow the instructions in Steps 1 and 2 to return to this folder.  You need to perform a few steps in this folder.

  1. Right click on the newly created icon and go to properties.

  1. A window will open to that will have a few tabs and look similar to the window below.

  1. After checking to ensure the phone number is correct click on the “Server Types”.  On this screen the Type of Dial-Up Server should be PPP: Internet, Windows NT Server, Windows 98.

In the “Allowed network protocols” it is only necessary to have TCP/IP checked.

  1. To advance to the next step click on the “TCP/IP Settings” button, which will open a window that looks like the below picture.  On this window you will need to make sure that the “Server assigned IP address is selected.

Then click on “Specify name server addresses” and in the Primary DNS box enter 146.85.1.50.  Then click OK on any open windows.

You may be asked to restart Windows at this point.  If you are then allow the computer to restart so the settings you entered can be saved.  After the restart you will need to follow the instructions in steps 1 and 2 to return to the screen displayed in step 11.

  1. This should take you back to the following window.

  1. You can now double click on the icon and connect to the Internet.  You will have to enter your username and password as they appear on the Dial-Up Networking form you completed.

  1. You should now be able to connect to the Internet and open a web browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape) from your computer.

Troubleshooting

If the computer acts as if it will connect but repeatedly asks for a username and password, this indicates that the password you are entering does not match the password typed into the computers at Shawnee State.  To fix this you must bring a picture ID to UIS and the password will be checked.

The computer connects but no web pages will open up.  This normally indicates that the DNS was not entered in correctly.

If there is no dial tone then you will want to check the phone line with a telephone to see if you are able to place calls.  If the line works with a telephone but there is still no dial tone when attempting to dial-up you will need to check to ensure your modem is installed and working properly.

Creating A Shortcut

You can create a short cut to the dial-up connection by following the steps outlined below.

A.     Complete Steps 1 and 2 in the instructions.

B.     Right click on the SSU icon

C.     Select Create Shortcut

D.     You will be prompted if you want the shortcut placed on your desktop.  Click Yes.

Long Distance Charges

Calling the modem bank at Shawnee State University is identical to making a regular phone call.  It is strongly suggested that the modems are only used when calling the modems will be considered a local call.  If you live out side the local call area, long distance charges will accrue on your phone bill.  Shawnee State University or University Information Services do not accept any responsibility for phone charges that may appear on the phone bill as a result of establishing a dial up connection to the modems found at Shawnee State University.
