UIS Restricts Illegal peer-to-peer (P2P) File Sharing

Shawnee State University restricts illegal peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing on our campus network. P2P technologies may be used for legitimate purposes such as instructional gaming, open source downloads, and licensed distribution of media files; however, the use of P2P software to violate copyright law carries a number of possible sanctions, including loss of Internet access, internal disciplinary actions, and even civil or criminal charges.  Shawnee State University takes our obligation under The Higher Education Opportunity Act (H.R. 4137), as well as all other State and Federal legislations that address P2P file sharing, very seriously and will make all efforts to comply with authorities if users of the Shawnee State University Network are suspected of violations.

UIS Deploys Office 2007

We have several important communications to share with you in regards to Microsoft software and our efforts to upgrade the campus to Office 2007 for fall semester. We have completed the deployment of Office 2007 in all academic labs and departmental offices. We realize this installation was a necessity for many and a source of frustration for others. If you are experiencing problems or your computer has not installed Office 2007, do not hesitate to contact UIS at extension 3538 or by submitting an email request to help desk.

We are also aware of users reporting issues with their Outlook email as a result of this upgrade. Specially, they report losing their profile settings such as contacts, calendars etc. We are not aware of a specific instance reported by Microsoft that could serve as the source of this problem. Consequently, if you see that some of your settings are missing, contact UIS and a technician will follow-up and investigate. The majority of issues we are aware of are a result of the software installation process not completing due to user interruption. On average, it will take an estimated 30 minutes after the machine is rebooted for the installation to complete. If the installation process has been interrupted, Office 2003 will continue to execute. UIS will need to revisit the computer to complete the upgrade to the 2007 version.

We also understand that as with any upgrade, there is a learning curve to overcome some of the differences in the new version. UIS offers a link to Microsoft training videos and tutorials that should help you understand and become familiar with the functional changes. Click here to view training resources.

Finally, UIS now has copies of Microsoft Office 2007 for faculty and staff, at no charge. You must complete the online voucher at http://www.shawnee.edu/microsoft. Stop by the UIS office and a representative will help you.
