 Bubba's Banter

Hey Folks!

I want to start off by thanking you all for an amazing summer.  I hope that each and every one of you had an educational and enjoyable experience.  It has been really great meeting you all and getting to know you better.  I enjoyed myself this summer and hated to see all of you guys leave.  I really hope that those who are eligible will return for another exciting summer next year.  I can’t explain how happy I was to hear that we had been refunded for another four years.  You guys deserved it.  You all have worked hard and appreciated what UBMS has done for you.  As some of you already know, I have now started going out into the schools.  I hope to make it out to see everyone by the end of this month.  If there is anything that I can do for you before I get out to your school, please do not hesitate to call or e-mail.

There of course have been some changes in the office.  Bubba has packed his things and Tina has moved in.  I know that things won’t be the same without Tim, but I’m sure that he will always be there for us if we need him.  Tina Moore has joined us here in the office as our work study employee.  She will be helping out a lot here in the office by putting things in files, answering phones, and helping setting up Saturday activities.  I’m not exactly sure of when a new Director will be in place.  I will let you know when and if I hear anything.

Our first Saturday Activity of 2007 will be September 29th from 10:00 am—2:00 pm in the lecture hall located next to the Planetarium (ATC building).  We will begin the morning by discussing some of the things to look forward to this upcoming year.  We will discuss some of the changes being made in UBMS and then close off the afternoon with icebreakers and other fun games.  If you do not think you will make it, you must let me know as soon as possible.

If you guys need anything, give me a shout.  I will be posting things on the myspace group page so be checking that out.  Also, make sure you read the monthly newsletter online and turn in that homework.  See you soon!

 Homework Assignment

Remember, it is essential we receive your assignment.  If you are late, or do not complete any two monthly assignments, you will  be considered ineligible for college visits.

It's time for another creative writing assignment.  Write a creative piece about your 2007 summer UBMS experience.  You can write a song,  poem, performance skit, or an essay.  Feel free to use any formatting method that fits your piece.  Be creative!  Also, send us a baby picture of yourself for the "Bring a Friend Day" slideshow.  Since the newsletter was posted late, this assignment will not be due until October 12.

Remember, all assignments must be up to date in order to be eligible for the summer.

Assignments should be sent to Steve's e-mail address: scunningham@shawnee.edu

Entrance Information for Freshmen
Planning for College

Not sure what you need to do to prepare for college admission? Here you will find information to help you select the college or university that is best for you.

Applying to Ohio University
Ohio University has approximately 4,100 spaces available for incoming freshmen. With more than 250 majors and programs from which to choose and a freshman to sophomore year retention rate of 81%, competition for admission is growing more intense!

To give you an idea of the level of our incoming students, here is the middle 50 percent range for students admitted to the Fall 2005 freshman class:

  • Top 15-46% of their graduating high school class.
  • The average composite ACT score range was 21-25.
  • The average combined SAT score range was 990-1190 (math and critical reading).
  • The average high school grade point average was 3.4 (on a 4.0 scale).

Undergraduate Admissions considers the following criteria in granting admission:

  • Strength of curriculum
  • Performance in curriculum
  • Class rank
  • Grade Point Average
  • ACT and/or SAT scores

To be considered for admission, it is recommended that you have taken the ACT or SAT by December of your senior year. Students are expected to have successfully completed a strong college preparatory program.

Particular attention is paid to performance in the junior year of high school, with consideration made for grade improvements or declines.

Suggested College Prep Coursework for High School Students
Ohio University strongly recommends that all applicants complete the following college-preparatory high school courses (at minimum):

Subject Area Units Recommended

UBMS Photo Page

Heather Holland came up with the idea of sharing summer photos with one another through the internet.  She has setup a webpage through photobucket.com in which UBMS participants can share their photos and order a CD of photos if they desire.  The following are directions and a link so that you can view and upload your own photos.

  • save your pictures to a folder on your computer

  • go to www.photobucket.com

  • put in these two items:
    sign in name: UBMSsummer2005
    password: bubba

  • click on browse and find the folder your pictures are in

  • double click on the picture (it will bring you back to the main page) then click submit

  • it’ll take some time depending on how fast or slow your computer is, but your picture will load up there.

  • keep adding pictures from the summer, the final trip, anything to do with UBMS
