October 2007

 Bubba's Banter

Howdy Folks!

Happy October to all!  I hope that each of you have started off the school year on a positive note.  I know that I have seen most of you out on school visits and I plan on visiting the rest of you sometime very soon.  A couple of scheduling conflicts with guidance counselors caused me to push back some of my visits, but I do plan on visiting the rest of you within the first couple weeks of October.  I want to thank everyone who was able to make it over to the September activity.  I was very pleased with the turnout and I hope that you all had a good time and learned something from the activities.  I know that it was really nice to have all of you guys together again.  I was however a little disappointed that some of you did not show.  Remember that you are only allowed to miss 2 unexcused absences to be eligible for the Winter Retreat and Summer 2008.  Also, make sure that you turn your homework in to me.  If you are absent from the Saturday activity and unable to turn in your homework, you must turn it in within one week.  I don’t want to see anyone miss out on some pretty fun and exciting activities all because they had unexcused absences or didn’t turn in the homework assignments.

Seniors & Juniors—I hope to put together a college visit to Ohio University-Athens sometime before the end of October.  If you are interested in going, please let me know and we will make all of the necessary arrangements.  I will let you know of a date as soon as it becomes official.  Let me know as soon as possible so we can prepare a permission slip for you to turn into your high school office.  I also want to congratulate those Seniors who were selected as our Bridge participants for 2007-2008.  The letters have been sent out.  I know that it was very difficult for the selection committee to choose so you should feel very proud.  For those of who did not get selected, I want you to know that I think highly of you all and care about each and every one of you.  You will always be a part of SSU UBMS and I hope that you continue to keep in touch and allow us to help you throughout this school year and on into college.  I hope that you still continue to attend our Saturday activities and take part in our Winter Retreat.

If you guys need anything, get in touch with me.  Remember, send in your homework and get me those baby pictures.  You will get these back, I promise.  Just make sure that your name is on the back and don’t show anyone!

Happy Halloween!!!!

Bubba's Banter

Hey everyone, I'm so excited to be working for all of you this year and have the opportunity to write in the newsletter this month! Now, I know that some of you may be starting to feel a little unmotivated; we've been in school around 2 months and the holidays are creeping up on us. (No pun intended.) It's around this time that the pressure starts to build and we may want to just give up because there seems to be no end in sight. But please, keep your head up and stay focused on your goals. If there are any of you that need help or simply someone to listen, you know that the UBMS staff and I are always here. Make sure you're doing your homework and I hope to see or hear from all of you very soon!

Happy Halloween!!

 Homework Assignment

Remember, it is essential we receive your assignment.  If you are late, or do not complete any two monthly assignments, you will  be considered ineligible for college visits.

This assignment is for everyone.  Select a career field that interests you and talk to someone in that field to determine what they like and dislike about their jobs and what kind of education is needed for each type of job.  Answer the questions: What steps will I have to take in my education to work in this field?  Report your findings in a two page typed paper using 12 point font, double spaced.

Remember, all assignments must be up to date in order to be eligible for the summer.

Assignments should be sent to Steve's e-mail address: scunningham@shawnee.edu

UBMS Photo Page

Heather Holland came up with the idea of sharing summer photos with one another through the internet.  She has setup a webpage through photobucket.com in which UBMS participants can share their photos and order a CD of photos if they desire.  The following are directions and a link so that you can view and upload your own photos.

  • save your pictures to a folder on your computer

  • go to www.photobucket.com

  • put in these two items:
    sign in name: UBMSsummer2005
    password: bubba

  • click on browse and find the folder your pictures are in

  • double click on the picture (it will bring you back to the main page) then click submit

  • it’ll take some time depending on how fast or slow your computer is, but your picture will load up there.

  • keep adding pictures from the summer, the final trip, anything to do with UBMS

What has college been like so far for Staci Armbrust?

1.  What is your favorite UBMS memory?
During the final trip, me, Holly, Angie, Conrad hiked up in Yosemite and ate banana chips.

2.  What courses are you taking and what college do you go to?
I go to Shawnee State University working on associates in Respiratory Therapy.  This semester, I am taking Cardiopulmonary, Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Terminology, and Intro to Respiratory Therapy.

3. What do you plan on doing with your degree once you get out of college?
After I graduate from SSU, I plan on attending The Ohio State University to work on my bachelors in Respiratory.  I then hope to work at Children’s Hospital in Columbus.

4.
What is your favorite thing about college?
Meeting new people and being able to do whatever you’d like.

5. How does college differ from High School?
There is a lot more studying to do in college because of how much harder it is.  However, you do have a lot more freedom in college.

6. What advice do you have about college to those who are still in High School?
Keep studying….don’t give up on your grades.  Keep involved in activities.  Research and decide what college you plan on attending and begin thinking about what you’d like to do with your life…but most importantly, have fun because you’ll never get it back!  Have a Great Day!
