Bubba's Banter
Hey Gang,
We are on our way! Most of you will have
already seen us by the time you have read this, however, we
are excited to get out and visit with you. Here are some
things that each of you should be keeping in mind:
Seniors
You should be doing several things at
this point and time. First, you need to be applying to the
schools that you are interested in attending.
If there is
an application fee, we can attempt to send the school a fee
waiver request. You need to ask us.
Secondly, now is the time to apply for a
PIN number for your FAFSA. The link to the FAFSA is on the
left hand side of this webpage and on our messageboard.
Thirdly, if you need a fee waiver for
the ACT we will bring those around on school visits.
If
you haven’t yet taken the ACT you need to register for the
next test now.
Juniors
At this point and time you should be
working on maintaining your grades and taking challenging
classes that will help you out not only in college, but help
to prepare you for the ACT. I recommend taking the ACT at
some point during your junior year. Remember, the next one’s
on us. We will give you a fee waiver for the ACT at the
beginning of your senior year.
You should also be getting a good idea of
the colleges that you want to consider. Next year at this
time you will be sending out college applications. Start
looking at specific programs and admissions requirements. If
time permits take the opportunity to visit some schools.
I want to thank everyone who has
returned the paperwork that we mailed to each of you. We
still have some evaluations and intent to return letters
straggling in. For the most part, everyone has turned
everything in.
Our next school visits will start the
recruiting process. Hopefully, each of you is doing your part
to spread the word about your experiences this past summer.
If you are willing we may ask you to give a testimony about
UBMS.
Until the next time,
Love, peace, and chicken grease,
Bubba

Kendra's Korner
Hey everyone,
I hope that all of you are
doing well. School is well underway now for all of you and for
all of us here at Shawnee. Remember to stay on top of your
homework and studying. If you need help with anything, please
let us know.
After speaking with a few of
the seniors, it appears that you all are on the ball looking
into colleges. I just have a few words of advice as you begin
to tackle your senior year and the huge decision that you are
encountering. First and foremost, remember your deadlines. I
cannot stress this enough. Deadlines are the most crucial
part of filling out college and scholarship applications. Make
sure that you have your application in on time. Also watch for
early bird deadlines because many times the fees are less, or
possibly free, to those who get their application in early.
Be sure that you know all of your deadlines and that you ask
for the references and grade information needed for each well
before the applications are due. Also, look in as many places
as possible for the scholarships. You might find one in places
you never thought you could. In addition, college visitations
are a plus. Sometimes a college can look great on paper, but
it isn’t what you expect when you visit. Make sure that you
find the college that is right for you.
Juniors, now is the time when
you start getting bombarded with college information. However,
some schools you want to send you information may not send
anything to you. The good news is that you can typically
request the information you need online. Get as much
information as you can on the schools in which you are
interested. Start now on looking into various schools and
finding those that meet your expectations. Make sure that the
schools you choose have the programs that you are looking for.
Eliminate those schools now that don’t offer what you need.
For those of you who are
taking the ACT, remember, you can receive one fee waiver to
take the test from us. If you are interested, give us a call
and we will do our best to get a waiver to you. Remember also
that when you receive your scores, we need a copy of them.
I wish you all the best of
luck through the next few months. Unfortunately I will be
unable to come on the school visits to see all of you due to
my busy class schedule. However, if there is anything you need
help with or if you just need to talk, feel free to email me
or call me anytime. Keep up the good work with school. I hope
to see you all at Winter Retreat.

I hope that you are all doing very well. I know you have a lot

Homework Assignment
(Remember
that it is essential we receive your assignment and that failure to
complete assignments will affect your participation status for the
summer.)
This month's assignment is to
chose a scholarship that you would be eligible for and send us a
copy of it. Seniors must choose
one scholarship and apply for it, sending us an actual copy of the
scholarship application you are applying for.
Secondly, go to the message board and place a link to your favorite
website under the heading appropriately named "Your Favorite
Website."
The deadline for this assignment
is Friday, October 14th.

achievement (repayment is not required)
- Grants, based on financial need (repayment

- Loans (repayment is required after leaving
school)
- Work-study employment and campus jobs
Sixty-five percent of Miami students graduate in four
years. That saves you money because you have fewer semesters'
worth of expenses. Nationally, only 36.4 percent of students
graduate in four years.

UBMS
Photo Page
Heather Holland
came up with the idea of sharing summer photos with one another
through the internet. She has setup a webpage through
photobucket.com in which UBMS participants can share their photos
and order a CD of photos if they desire. The following are
directions and a link so that you can view and upload your own
photos.
-
save
your pictures to a folder on your computer
-
go
to www.photobucket.com
-
put
in these two items:
sign in name:
UBMSsummer2005
password:
bubba
-
click
on browse and find the folder your pictures are in
-
double
click on the picture (it will bring you back to the main page)
then click submit
-
it’ll take some time depending on how fast or slow your
computer is, but your picture will load up there.
-
keep
adding pictures from the summer, the final trip, anything to do
with UBMS
Winter Retreat

Plans are well underway for this
year's winter retreat, which will take us to Columbus, Ohio the
weekend of January 13-15. So far, we have planned trips to the
Columbus Zoo, Capital University, and Tuttle Crossing Mall.
The schedule is still being developed and we may add a few more
venues to the list. Once the schedule is finalized, it will be
posted in next month's newsletter and online at our message board.
Once the agenda is finalized, we will give you an idea of pick-up
times at various locations for each of you. In the meantime,
if you should have any questions regarding the winter retreat,
please call us toll free at 1-877-778-8267 (UBMS).

Fall Fundraiser
This year's fall fundraiser will be a raffle for a gift certificate valued at $350
for Deer Creek Resort and Conference Center. The gift
certificate should be sufficient to cover two nights lodging
and dinner for two at the lodge. During our initial school
visits in September and October we will be giving students
raffle tickets. Each student will receive 75 tickets which
they will sell for $1 each. We will provide more information
about the fundraiser at that time.
If
you have any questions or concerns regarding fundraising,
please contact us at 1-877-778-8267.
