Hey Gang,

I hope that each of you have started off the school year on a positive note.  Seniors, you need to be filling out those scholarship applications and deciding on the college that best suits you.  There are many deadlines that are soon approaching so pay attention to those and get your stuff turned in on time.  If there is anything that I can help you with whether it be assisting you in the application process or just typing up a recommendation letter for you let me know.  I know that the stress will start to build up for some of you, so please allow me to help.  All of you, sophomores thru seniors, should check the calendar that you guys created at September’s Saturday Activity and make sure you are doing the things that are needed to be done.  Please make sure that you are working hard and keeping your grades up.  Don’t wait until the last few days of a grading period and start asking for help or begin worrying about your grades.

I am still a little bit disappointed in the commitment from some of you.  There have been some who have not put the effort into the homework or the Saturday activities.  Remember that homework must be kept up to date if you plan on attending Winter Retreat or if you hope to return next summer.  Do not be late on homework assignments.  And it must be done correctly!  You will not receive your stipend if your homework is not kept up to date.  Also, if you think that you are going to miss a Saturday activity, please let me know well ahead of time.  Do not e-mail me two days later explaining why you weren’t there.  I have to let the cafeteria know how many people plan on showing up within a week of the event.  Also, unexcused forms must be turned in PRIOR to the activity that you miss.  If you have two activities that are unexcused, you may be risking your eligibility for next summer.

As most of you know by now we have hired a new Director.  We all have waited patiently for someone to step in and I really look forward to working with them.  I promise you that I will try my best in making the transition as smooth as possible for all of us.  We just all need to work together and be committed as a UBMS “family.”  I don’t want to see us getting away from that.  I want you to be happy with what is out there, work hard at what has been given (we aren’t asking much), and allow us to assist you in reaching that major goal of yours—going to college!  Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!

 I love Turkey!

Happy Thanksgiving UBMS family! The year is starting to wrap up, which means that the work load is double because teachers are trying to get in all the information they can before the holidays come around. As a result, we become tired and frustrated, and many of us will just want to get everything over with so we can enjoy some relaxation time; I am guilty of that myself. But as you read this, I ask each of you to just sit back and take a deep breath while you clear your minds of all worries and those annoying to-do lists. Now, instead of concentrating on those troubles, think about the positive things in your life. I’ll admit that some may not be so obvious, but trust me when I say that each of you have something that you can be thankful for this Thanksgiving. I’m not just talking about food, though we are all fortunate enough not to be one of the several statistics I’ve heard in my Sociology class which represent the amount of people, especially infants and young children, who die from starvation every year. In addition to the chance to live past five, you have the opportunity to higher education and a life of happiness. Let’s not forget one of the most significant things to be grateful for though, everyone here has a family to share life’s moments with, including the heartaches and the laughter. So, after you’ve finished reading my note to you, I hope that whatever was weighing you down is gone and a smile is on your face. Stay determined and do your personal best! I can’t wait to see all of you, so make sure you turn in everything and attend the activities, you never know what can happen!

 Homework Assignment

Remember, it is essential we receive your assignment.  If you fail to complete any assignment, you may be considered ineligible for college visits as well as the upcoming summer program.

This month's assignment is to choose a scholarship that you would be eligible for and send us a copy of it.  Seniors must choose one scholarship and apply for it, sending us an actual copy of the scholarship application you are applying for.  Secondly, we would like each of you to introduce yourselves to our new Director!  You can make a card and mail it in or just e-mail a letter.  It may be a good idea to welcome him to our family, introduce you, and mention your goals and expectations for this upcoming school year and next summer.  This assignment MUST be turned in by November 30th.

Assignments should be sent to Steve's e-mail address: scunningham@shawnee.edu

UBMS University Spotlight of the Month:

Heidelberg College
Tiffin, Ohio

www.heidelberg.edu

Where is Tiffin?
Heidelberg is located in northwest Ohio, 90 minutes from the metropolitan areas of Columbus, Cleveland and Toledo. Tiffin is a safe and comfortable community named after Edward Tiffin, the first governor of the state. Tiffin offers residents and visitors some wonderful treasures, most within walking distance from the campus.

What is Heidelberg’s enrollment?
About 1,500 students attend Heidelberg, including 1,100 traditional undergraduates. Forty-eight percent of Heidelberg students are female and 52 percent are male.

What is Heidelberg’s class size?
Our average class size is 20 students, with a student to faculty ratio of 13:1. The benefit is the personalized attention that you will receive from your professors.

What does a student on your campus look like academically?
On average, a student comes to Heidelberg with a 3.2 GPA and a 22 ACT or a 1530 SAT. However, during the admission process we take into account more than just your GPA and test scores. We also look at what courses you have taken, and the activities in which you participate.

How much is tuition for the 2006–2007 academic year?
Including room and board and technology fees, tuition totals $24,930. Below is a breakdown of the costs:
Tuition and fees $18,190
Room and Board $7,902
Technology Fee $428
Total Direct Charges $26,520
More than 95% of students receive financial aid to help with the cost of college. Visit our Financial Aid page to learn more.

In what athletic conference does Heidelberg compete?
Heidelberg is a member of the NCAA Division III and the Ohio Athletic Conference, the third oldest conference in college athletics. The Conference is older than the World Series and even the NCAA itself. While maintaining high academic standards, OAC athletic teams and athletes consistently enjoy a great deal of success on both the regional and national level.

What options are available to me for living on campus?
About 85 percent of students live in campus–owned housing, which includes six traditional residence halls, senior apartments and an average of 10 Cooperative Learning Communities (CLC). CLCs are themed houses that provide you with the opportunity to develop initiatives and programs that you feel will benefit the Heidelberg and/or Tiffin communities.

If you live within a 50-mile radius of Heidelberg College, you have the option of commuting.

Can I study abroad at Heidelberg?
Absolutely! Heidelberg has many study abroad opportunities for all students, including study in Oxford, England, Heidelberg Germany, and Seville, Spain.

UBMS Photo Page

Heather Holland came up with the idea of sharing summer photos with one another through the internet.  She has setup a webpage through photobucket.com in which UBMS participants can share their photos and order a CD of photos if they desire.  The following are directions and a link so that you can view and upload your own photos.

  • save your pictures to a folder on your computer

  • go to www.photobucket.com

  • put in these two items:
    sign in name: UBMSSummerFUN
    password: 2msfamily

  • click on browse and find the folder your pictures are in

  • double click on the picture (it will bring you back to the main page) then click submit

  • it’ll take some time depending on how fast or slow your computer is, but your picture will load up there.

  • keep adding pictures from the summer, the final trip, anything to do with UBMS

Alumni Alley

What has college been like so far for Andrew Abt?

1.  What is your favorite UBMS memory?
My favorite UBMS memories would have to be The Oatmeal Fight in Summer 05, hiking with Matt, Adam, and Tanya when Adam developed a lip fungus, and camping and hiking in Yosemite.

2.  What courses are you taking and what college do you go to?
I go to THE Ohio State University and am currently taking Math 152 (Calculus 2), Philosophy 101, Psychology 100, and Biology Survey.

3. What do you plan on doing with your degree once you get out of college?
Obtaining a position as a high school science teacher.

4.
What is your favorite thing about college?
The Freedom and the football (Go Bucks!)

5. How does college differ from High School?
The courses are at a faster pace and are much more difficult.  You are not required to go to class….you are expected to go to class.

6. What advice do you have about college to those who are still in High School?
Take as many AP and Post-Secondary options as you possibly can.  Don’t worry so much about GPA…worry about the classes that you take.
