School Visits

November, 2005

Ryan's Rant

Hello all,

I hope the first couple of months of school have gone well for each of you.  The UBMS staff has been busy getting things from summer finished up, planning and conducting school visits, beginning recruiting, getting ready for winter retreat, and yes preparing for next summer already.

I apologize for not “ranting” in the first two newsletters this year, but I have been very busy with other aspects of my job and have been unable to devote the time necessary to get that part of my job completed.  Speaking of time, I hope each of you are taking the time necessary to get your homework completed and studying the amount necessary to continue to be successful.  I have not been doing a good job of managing my time lately and I am making a renewed effort to better plan things and I hope, if you are having the same problem, you will do the same.

Tim will be out during this month recruiting and he will be asking each of you to say a few words about your experiences in the summer, so please be ready to share.  Additionally, the winter retreat will be here before you know, and I think that each of you will be excited about the things we have planned.

I look forward to seeing each of you again when I get the chance.

 Sincerely,

Ryan

As you read this, recruiting is in high gear at the moment. Please encourage your classmates to get their materials in to us on time. I will be following up on seniors to ensure that you have applied to the colleges or universities that you indicated interest in. Juniors should be looking towards taking the ACT this coming spring. A list of dates and registration deadlines for the ACT are located within this newsletter.

I would like to remind seniors that we would like to help you with letters of recommendation for scholarships. Some scholarships may require you to write an essay. If you apply for a scholarship requiring an essay we would also be more than grateful to help you with that. Use and abuse us. That is what we are here for.

It looks like we will have a full load for winter retreat. As soon as the itinerary is set we will post it in next months newsletter and on the messageboard. Included in the itinerary will be meeting times to pick everyone up along with pickup locations.

I would like to remind everyone to look at the links at the left-hand side of the newsletter. These are constantly evolving. We place these links here to give you quick access to financial aid information, study skills information, ACT/SAT information, and college search information.

Continue to work hard in your classes. The midpoint of the school year is fast approaching. Thanksgiving will soon be upon us and then Christmas. I would encourage each of you to take time over this upcoming holiday season to draw closer to your families and create some memories that you will cherish for a lifetime. Go out to eat with your parents, go shopping with them, or even just sit around the table and play some board games. For many of the seniors, you will be moving out and attending college at this time next year.

Once you leave your parents house it is never the same. Sure, the love is still there, and your home will always be home. Its just different, a feeling you just can't pin down. At the point you leave for college, you are spreading your wings and getting ready to fly.

My goal is to get back out and complete interviews throughout the month of December. Hopefully, if weather permits, we will catch up with each of you at that time.

Bubba

Kendra's Korner

Hey everyone,

I hope that this letter finds you all well. With November coming brings about 2 major things. First is Thanksgiving, the time to be thankful for what you have in life and the time to spend eating a great meal with those whom you care about. Secondly, November provides a nice, well-deserved break from school. I know that holiday time is the hardest time to concentrate and stay focused on school, but hang in there. Grades can still fall in just a short period of time. Remember that as you get grade cards, we would like to have a copy so we know how you all are doing.

I have heard that school visits went well over the past few weeks. It was good to hear that you all have been doing well. I am sorry that I have been unable to get out to see you guys. I am carrying a heavy load this quarter and I have classes all day long. However, I am hoping that I will be able to see some of you in the upcoming months.

Just a few quick reminders, remember to keep selling your fundraising tickets. The more money you earn, the better the trips can be. Also, seniors remember your deadlines and make sure you request recommendations early. You can never be too careful when filling out your applications. Make sure that everything is in line so that you are well represented by your applications.

I hope that all of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Remember that it is the season to be thankful. I just want to share with all of you that I am thankful for you and the opportunities that I have had to meet you and get to know you. I want you to know that no matter what, you can always call me or email me if you need someone to talk to. You are wonderful people and you have enriched my life so much. Thank you for being you! Happy Thanksgiving!

Ashley’s Advice

Hey Guys! I hope school is going well! I have been very busy this quarter. We will be recruiting soon so I hope all of you are putting a good word out for the program (and the crazy RAs!). I am hoping to be able to come along for some of the recruiting, but just in case my class schedule interferes, I hope to see you at Winter Retreat! If you need anything don't be afraid to e-mail me. I look forward to hearing from all of you!

 Homework Assignment

(Remember that it is essential we receive your assignment and that failure to complete assignments will affect your participation status for the summer.)

Part l

We want to see your creative side. Please complete a poem, acrostic, short story, etc., about UBMS. The top 3 or 4 will be published in next month's newsletter and receive a super-duper semi-fabulous prize. Email these to Tim at tamburgey@shawnee.edu

Part ll

Post on the messageboard your idea for next summer's theme. Post them in the Homework Assignment discussion area under the November thread. Please include a "catch phrase" as part of your theme (for ex. 2 years ago we did "College is the Rock of your Future" and had shirts with a picture of Alcatraz on them).

The deadline for this assignment is Friday, November 18.

UBMS Photo Page

Heather Holland came up with the idea of sharing summer photos with one another through the internet.  She has setup a webpage through photobucket.com in which UBMS participants can share their photos and order a CD of photos if they desire.  The following are directions and a link so that you can view and upload your own photos.

  • save your pictures to a folder on your computer

  • go to www.photobucket.com

  • put in these two items:
    sign in name: UBMSsummer2005
    password: bubba

  • click on browse and find the folder your pictures are in

  • double click on the picture (it will bring you back to the main page) then click submit

  • it’ll take some time depending on how fast or slow your computer is, but your picture will load up there.

  • keep adding pictures from the summer, the final trip, anything to do with UBMS
