 Bubba's Banter

Hey Guys!

First off I want to thank everyone who attended the Winter Retreat.  I thought the weekend went amazingly well.  I know that I had a really good time and I hope that each of you did as well.  I hated seeing some of you miss out because of the weather.  I really wish that all of us could’ve attended.   As most of you know recruiting and interviewing is in full swing right now.  The final interviews and selections will be made within the next couple of weeks.  I believe that we have had a great group of students that would fit great into our “family.”  This is definitely my favorite part about working for UBMS, but it is also my least favorite part because of the fact that we have to turn down some really good candidates.  I want to thank those of you who spread the word about the program and encouraged these students to apply.  I also encourage each of you to keep up with your homework.  I do not want to see one of these new students take your spot because you didn’t complete assignments on time or didn’t have them done correctly.  Again, this is one of the only things that we ask of you in order to keep your eligibility for the summer.

Summer preparations have begun.  I am searching for professors to teach classes and have already started planning and thinking of ideas for trips.  Our next plan of attack will be to get on the phone, start making the reservations, and picking out some good restaurants to eat.  =)  Seniors, I know that that your time is wrapping up.  If there is anything that I can do to help, please do not hesitate to ask me.  I am always here for you guys and am very proud of some of your guys’ accomplishments.  Each of you have something to be very proud of.

Our next Saturday Activity is planned for Saturday, March 29th.  Please be there.  Some of you have already missed the 2 unexcused absences.  I am counting on you being there.  If you have something that is school related, you must send in your form and let me know ahead of time.  I look forward to seeing you guys.  We will talk more about our new students, things to look forward to the summer, and take part in some other type of workshops, games, and icebreakers.

Take Care and enjoy the beginning of Spring!

A NEW SUMMER by Angie Coody

A year has gone by and the wait is finally over

The summer I’ve been looking forward to is here.

All I have left in me is fear but

The new moments are so near.

The summer starts and the fear is washed away

Cause we work hard and play all day

We all have so much to say

But we don’t know what’s the right way

A new journey begins

All over again

For this journey a lot more has been brought in but

None of my journeys will be forgotten

Poem by Brittany Daniels

My life changed this summer

I became part of a family

I made friends; companions

And for the first time I LIVED

I loved flying and riding the metro,

Once the fear subsided

Going to DC and California

Meant the world to me

I’ll never forget

The night of the dance

I had so much fun

I never wanted the night to end

Another chapter of my life was written this summer

And although it has to come to an end

The memories will be in my heart forever.

Poem by Seth Jones

 Unique and wonderful people

Pride in building the future

Want to come back

Always love it

Really good friends

Darn good times

Being around awesome people

Outstanding summer

Unusual sites

Nobody left out

 Homework Assignment

Remember, it is essential we receive your assignment.  If you fail to complete any assignment, you may be considered ineligible for college visits as well as the upcoming summer program.

February

Write a 500-600 word essay on which of the Presidential candidates you would vote for in the 2008 election.  Tell us why this candidate would get your vote. What is your candidate's position on the issue of access to higher education?  Would your candidate support continued funding of Trio Programs?  If not, how do you overcome this in your decision to vote for this candidate?  What are the most important issues to you?

Use 2 of the pre-writing techniques discussed in the UBMS writing workshops: freewriting, outlining, questioning, bubbling, etc.  Attach them to the finished essay (they need not look pretty, just show us your work).

In order to receive credit for this assignment, your essay must be typed using 12 point font, double spaced.

This assignment is due March 14.

March

Research your top three schools and create one final test with at least 10 questions, including multiple choice, fill in the blank, and short essay.  You do not need to come up with 10 questions about each school, just provide 10 total.  There must be at least 2 questions about each school.  Be sure to provide an answer key to your test.  Finally, write a short paragraph explaining why you chose these three schools or what interests you most about these colleges or universities.  Please e-mail your test, answer key and paragraph to Steve at the e-mail below.

This assignment is due March 31.

Please note: These assignments must be completed on time and done correctly or your spot will be filled with a new student.

Assignments should be sent to Steve's e-mail address: scunningham@shawnee.edu

UBMS Photo Page

Heather Holland came up with the idea of sharing summer photos with one another through the internet.  She has setup a webpage through photobucket.com in which UBMS participants can share their photos and order a CD of photos if they desire.  The following are directions and a link so that you can view and upload your own photos.

  • save your pictures to a folder on your computer

  • go to www.photobucket.com

  • put in these two items:
    sign in name: UBMSSummerFUN
    password: 2msfamily

  • click on browse and find the folder your pictures are in

  • double click on the picture (it will bring you back to the main page) then click submit

  • it’ll take some time depending on how fast or slow your computer is, but your picture will load up there.

  • keep adding pictures from the summer, the final trip, anything to do with UBMS
