 Bubba's Banter

Hey Folks.

First off, I must say that it was nice seeing some of you at Winter Retreat.  I thought that it was a very nice relaxing weekend and I hope that you guys all feel the same.  I am very excited about the upcoming summer.  A lot of the activities and trips we will be taking have been planned.  Our next plan of attack is to get on the phone and start making the reservations.  I encourage each of you to keep up with the monthly assignments.  I do not want to see anyone not be able to join us this summer or get to go on a fabulous final trip all because of a few short homework assignments.

As most of you know recruiting and interviewing is in full swing right now.  The final interviews and selections will be made within the next couple of weeks.  I believe that we have had a great group of students apply with many of them who would fit great into our “family.”  This is definitely my favorite part about working for UBMS, but it is also my least favorite part because of the fact that we have to turn down some really good candidates.  I want to thank those of you who spread the word about the program and encouraged these students to apply.

And finally, I want to close with this.  Most of you guys got to listen what Tim said about he and I being there for you and being available to talk.  I just want you to know that he truly means that and so do I.  You guys are awesome and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate working for you guys and enjoy getting to know more and more about you each day.  If you guys ever need anything, even if it is just someone to talk to for a little bit, do not hesitate to call me.

Take Care and enjoy the beginning of Spring!

Saint Louis University Grant Opportunity

The Trio Programs at Saint Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri have collaborated with the university administration to establish 50 grant aid packages for Trio students.  They are looking for 50 seniors with a G.P.A. of 3.0 or above and an ACT score of 22 and above that will be entering college in the fall of 2007.  If you are interested, we will send your name, e-mail, and mailing address to SLU.  Once received, they will forward your information to the admissions counselor from Saint Louis University who recruits in our area so that he/she will be able to identify you as eligible Trio grant recipients.

On average, Trio grant recipients received over $15,000 in aid this year, making Saint Louis University an affordable option for many students.  If you are interested, send Bubba an e-mail with your complete mailing address and let him know you want him to submit your name.  Don't miss out on this great opportunity!

UBMS Photo Page

Heather Holland came up with the idea of sharing summer photos with one another through the internet.  She has setup a webpage through photobucket.com in which UBMS participants can share their photos and order a CD of photos if they desire.  The following are directions and a link so that you can view and upload your own photos.

  • save your pictures to a folder on your computer

  • go to www.photobucket.com

  • put in these two items:
    sign in name: UBMSsummer2005
    password: bubba

  • click on browse and find the folder your pictures are in

  • double click on the picture (it will bring you back to the main page) then click submit

  • it’ll take some time depending on how fast or slow your computer is, but your picture will load up there.

  • keep adding pictures from the summer, the final trip, anything to do with UBMS

In a recent interview, Tanya Barnet shed some light on what it's like to be in college:

Q: What is your favorite UBMS memory?
A:  There are really too many to count. Watching the sunset over the Arizona skyline with people I knew I'd cherish the rest of my life sticks  out. Also, when Matt told the bus driver to write him up. That was awesome.

Q:  What courses are you taking and what college do you go to?
A:  Well, I'm attending Ohio University, and this is my second quarter. I'm taking 20 hours, which I strongly advise against... But I'm taking Precision Language (a grammar course), History of the Middle Ages, Statistics, Social and Political Philosophy, and Logic. Just trying to get those basic curricular things out of the way before I delve into journalism and political science full time.

Q:  What do you plan on doing with your degree once you get out of college?
A:  I want to work for a newspaper; the size of the circulation is unimportant. I hope to mainly copyedit, though I wouldn't be averse to reporting a bit of news here or there. Most other journalism majors I've talked to think both of those things are boring -- their loss.

Q:  What is your favorite thing about college?
A:  The freedom! Of course, with that comes responisbility, but I think that most of us in the UBMS program already have had a healthy helping of that, coming from families that need everyone to do their part to get by. I love being able to wake up in the morning and do things according to my schedule.

Q:  How does college differ from High School?
A:  Responsibility vs. Freedom. You have loads more of both now, and it's up to you to balance them. The classes are harder, and your professors do not care if you have papers due in all your other classes and 3 exams coming up.

Q:  What advice do you have about college to those who are still in high school?
A:  Again, it's all about responsibility: you have to learn to manage your time, and for the love of god, study! You may have breezed through high school, but it doesn't work like that here. You need to get a feel for your professors -- do they expect you to concentrate on lectures, reading from the text, or something else entirely? Also, try and watch what you're eating. I've had pizza more times this week than I can count, and it's only Tuesday. Be good to your bowels, and they'll be good to you. And on a personal note: watch the booze. It's everywhere here. Be smart like Mama Tanya and stay away from it.
