New Faces at UBMS

UBMS warmly welcomes new director Aaron Stewart!  Aaron hails from Coal Grove where he taught Tech Prep at Dawson-Bryant High School.  Aaron is highly skilled in the implementation of technology in teaching and has already created Blackboard accounts for everyone!  Wow!  (More on that at a later date.)  We look forward to Aaron's new ideas and experienced leadership!

Happy New Year!

2008 has started off fast for all of us here in the UBMS office.  As all of you know we now have a new director.  Aaron Stewart stepped in on January 2nd and has already made a jump into recruiting and getting to know a lot of the students.  Up first is Winter Retreat, followed by our parent meeting/student orientation in April, and then it is all summer.  We will be super busy these next few months, so we may need your help in taking care of some things.  Get your homework and other things turned in on time.  Some of you may be disappointed when you receive Winter Retreat letters.  In the fall I had each of you sign a student contract that listed all of the requirements for the retreat as well as the summer.  The two things that were looked at the most when making the selections were if your homework was turned in correctly and your attendance at Saturday Activities.  This is just a small price to pay for being in the UBMS program.  If you plan on returning for the summer component then I encourage everyone to have their assignments updated prior to February 1st.  I still have some stipends to give to people who did not have their homework updated.  If you want to receive these stipends then everything must be turned in before January 31st.  I will have these with me on our January recruiting visits so if you believe that I owe you money and your stuff is turned in, let me know.  After that date all stipends will be put back into the UBMS account.

Let all of your friends know that the UBMS guys will be out recruiting in January.  All applications are due on January 31st so if you know people who are interested, encourage them to turn everything in on time so they can get an interview in February.  I am still waiting on one school to get back with me about presentations so I will post the dates and times as soon as I get the final word.

Continue to work hard and press on as you move into the second half of the school year. I would encourage Seniors to take a look at the College Goal Sunday Program in February in order to receive assistance with financial aid. At this stage all of the seniors should have already sent in your applications to wherever you want to attend college. Please be aware that many scholarship deadlines have passed or are just about ready to pass. Know dates and deadlines.

I wish each of you and your family’s best wishes in the New Year.  If there is anything that I can do prior to the school visits or Winter Retreat, please let me know.

Steve

 Homework Assignment

Remember, it is essential we receive your assignment.  If you fail to complete any assignment, you may be considered ineligible for college visits as well as the upcoming summer program.

Choose an article about a significant event involving math or science that occurred during 2007. An example might be an important scientific discovery or breakthrough in medicine.

You must send us the link to the article (if searching via the web), or mail us a copy of the article. Along with the article you have chosen we need a 1 page (times new roman font, 12 pt, and double-spaced.) description of the article that must answer the following questions:

Why did you choose the article?

When and where did the breakthrough or discovery occur?

Who does the article impact? What is the impact?

What are the pros and cons of the article?

Will the discovery or breakthrough lead to other new ideas? What are some new ideas that may arise from this discovery?

In order to receive credit for this assignment each of the questions must be answered and meet the length and font requirements. Please take time to provide some thought provoking insight to the article and choose something that is of interest to you.

Assignments should be sent to Steve's e-mail address: scunningham@shawnee.edu

UBMS Photo Page

Heather Holland came up with the idea of sharing summer photos with one another through the internet.  She has setup a webpage through photobucket.com in which UBMS participants can share their photos and order a CD of photos if they desire.  The following are directions and a link so that you can view and upload your own photos.

  • save your pictures to a folder on your computer

  • go to www.photobucket.com

  • put in these two items:
    sign in name: UBMSSummerFUN
    password: 2msfamily

  • click on browse and find the folder your pictures are in

  • double click on the picture (it will bring you back to the main page) then click submit

  • it’ll take some time depending on how fast or slow your computer is, but your picture will load up there.

  • keep adding pictures from the summer, the final trip, anything to do with UBMS
