Bubba's Banter

Hey Gang,

The long winter months will soon be drawing to a close. With it comes a season of renewal. The challenge that I put forth to each of you at this time is to renew your commit to your goals. How many of you remember the goals that you established in the fall when we brought your Student Achievement Reports around? Spring always brings a breath a fresh air and invigorates our spirits…take time to assess your goals and decide if you are on the path to achieving them. If not take a step back and decide a new course of action.

Seniors, you have almost reach the summit….but your not quite there yet. By the conclusion of this month you should have your FAFSA completed. If you need help please call and we will assist you. KNOW YOUR DEADLINES for scholarships and housing applications. Let me repeat…KNOW YOUR DEADLINES.

The summer program is only 4 short months away and we are diligently plugging away and making preparations. Stay tuned for an announcement about our annual parent meeting. We should have new students selected by the end of the month and shortly thereafter we will conduct our parent meeting and orientation. Students attending winter retreat will be receiving an announcement by mail telling you where to report. I will also send you an itinerary for the weekend.

One final announcement…homework assignments must be kept up to date if you plan on participating in the summer. If an assignment says one full page we want one full page. Several students had to redo their assignments this past month because they did not follow instructions.

Take care,
Bubba

 Bubba's Banter

Hey Gang!

As most of you know, the UBMS staff is already gearing up for the summer.  The summer binder is already starting to gather some stuff in it and the schedule is basically already filling up with some pretty fun and exciting activities and trips.  We are in my favorite part of the summer preparations---Interviews!  The applications are now arriving in the office, Bubba is looking at them carefully, and then it’s back to the schools to make the selections.  We would like to thank those of you who helped in the recruiting presentations.  I believe that it really helps out to have a student give their input and share some of the experiences while being a member of the program.  They would much rather listen to you talk than to have two goofy guys bore them with information.  I hope that you guys have encouraged those good candidates to apply and helped remind those students to get their stuff turned in on time.

Well, Winter Retreat 2007 is right around the corner.  We are now putting the final touches on the weekend.  I’ve been putting together a “Summer Preview” presentation that I hope each of you will enjoy.  I think it is going to be a lot of fun and a good time to hang out with one another again.  I have received a couple of e-mails about how some of you are already planning Spotlight performances.  That is wonderful and I’m really looking forward to seeing them.  I’m sure Tim and I will put together some type of embarrassment as well.

And finally…to the Seniors---you are now in that final turn towards graduation.  If you guys need anything (letters of recommendation, scholarship help, assistant with applications), let us know.  We want to help out as much as we can.  And…to the Juniors---keep up with the homework assignments.  I don’t want to see ANYONE not be able to come this summer because they missed homework.  These assignments shouldn’t take much time.  Take some time off of your myspace schedules (yeah, I see you guys on there), and turn in that homework.  Well, I hope you guys have enjoyed your snow days---I’ll see you in a few weeks.

 Happy Valentines Day!

Grant Opportunity

Saint Louis University Grant Opportunity

The Trio Programs at Saint Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri have collaborated with the university administration to establish 50 grant aid packages for Trio students.  They are looking for 50 seniors with a G.P.A. of 3.0 or above and an ACT score of 22 and above that will be entering college in the fall of 2007.  If you are interested, we will send your name, e-mail, and mailing address to SLU.  Once received, they will forward your information to the admissions counselor from Saint Louis University who recruits in our area so that he/she will be able to identify you as eligible Trio grant recipients.

On average, Trio grant recipients received over $15,000 in aid this year, making Saint Louis University an affordable option for many students.  If you are interested, send Bubba an e-mail with your complete mailing address and let him know you want him to submit your name.  Don't miss out on this great opportunity!

 Homework Assignment

Remember, it is essential we receive your assignment.  If you are late, or do not complete any two monthly assignments, you will not be considered eligible for college visits or the winter retreat.

FIRST PART:

Choose 3 College Majors and/or Careers that you are interested in and search for them on your “college of choice” website.  Give us a brief summary of each major (the type of classes you would take, what you would be doing in the future, requirements to be in the program, etc.) and then tell us why you think you’d be interested in or why you think you’d enjoy that specific area of study.  Your summaries should equal up to at least one page in length and be in 12-point Times New Roman font (these will be checked in Microsoft Word).

 SECOND PART:

Send us a summer theme idea.  We would like to announce some of these at Winter Retreat.

Remember, all assignments must be up to date in order to be eligible for the summer.

Assignments should now be sent to Steve's e-mail address: scunningham@shawnee.edu

UBMS Photo Page

Heather Holland came up with the idea of sharing summer photos with one another through the internet.  She has setup a webpage through photobucket.com in which UBMS participants can share their photos and order a CD of photos if they desire.  The following are directions and a link so that you can view and upload your own photos.

  • save your pictures to a folder on your computer

  • go to www.photobucket.com

  • put in these two items:
    sign in name: UBMSsummer2005
    password: bubba

  • click on browse and find the folder your pictures are in

  • double click on the picture (it will bring you back to the main page) then click submit

  • it’ll take some time depending on how fast or slow your computer is, but your picture will load up there.

  • keep adding pictures from the summer, the final trip, anything to do with UBMS
