Bubba's Banter

Hey gang,

The office is fully staffed once again and moving forward.  Plans are currently moving forward on our annual winter retreat and once December moves through we will be turning our attention towards recruiting and summer planning.  It is amazing how things have flown past since the summer.  I have enjoyed some of you stopping in to visit the office.  With everyone scattered across Ohio and Kentucky we don’t often get a lot of visits during the academic year.

Let me give you a quick update on the winter retreat.  The TENTATIVE date will be February 23rd and February 24th.  I do stress that this is still tentative and could possibly change.  This date keeps us away from ACT test dates and puts us at the conclusion of basketball season which some of you are involved in.  The winter retreat will be conducted on SSU’s campus this year.  We will have an admissions presentation and a financial aid presentation by campus personnel.  In addition we will have several fun activities, a guest speaker, and for the first time we will have a winter spotlight!!!!  So get your acts prepared.  Of course there will be some semi-fabulous prizes involved.

I would like to remind our seniors that many deadlines will be coming up very soon.  If you have a particular scholarship or application that you need help with please ask and we would be happy to give you assistance in any manner possible.

In closing I would like to wish each of you a merry Christmas and extend holiday greetings to each of you.  Take time to enjoy your families over your break and make memories that will last a lifetime.

Bubba

(For those of you who don't know, Steve's birthday is December 25th!  Happy Birthday Steve!!)

Hey Gang!

First off, I must say that it has been very nice seeing all of you out on school visits so far.  I’ve been looking forward to getting out in the schools for quite some time now and luckily that time has finally come.  I guess Big Momma just misses seeing all of your smiling faces.  You all seem to be doing very well.  I know that you seniors are probably getting a little bit of the stresses of college applications and scholarships to fill out, but remember that we are here for help if you need it.  Don’t be afraid to come and ask.  That’s what we are here for.

As some of you already know, our magazines didn’t really sell as well as we hoped.  That just means that we just need to think of some other ideas to get us that money for the final trip.  We understand that some had difficulty selling and that is okay.  We just ask for your effort, so if you guys have any ideas, send them my way.  We need everyone to work as hard as they possibly can on this.  I don’t want to see you guys miss out on a wonderful trip.

And lastly, it’s almost recruiting time!  We are setting up the visits for the selected schools during the month of January.  Remember to encourage good candidates to apply and talk up the program.  Inform them of the trips we have taken, the friendships that you have all gathered, and the wonderful opportunity to hang out with two handsome gentlemen named Big Momma and Bubba. =) Send me an e-mail if you guys need anything.  I’m always here to talk.  I hope you all have a very good Christmas and a happy and safe New Year.

Happy Holidays!

UBMS 2006 Essay

        by Kaitlyn Ruark

I am waiting for something to go wrong.

I am waiting for familiar resolve.

I am waiting for another repeat.

Another diet fed by crippling defeat.....

The vocals of Ben Gibbard throbbed through my eardrums and seeped into my clouded mind.  Ever since I had heard the song, had actually listened to the words, it was an obvious match.  I had adopted these lyrics as my theme song, they seemed to fit perfectly with every action I had taken, including the one my parents were getting ever so closer to as we drove passed the almost mockingly vibrant green trees, and small decaying weeds scattered here and there along the roadside.  All I could do to get my mind off what lay ahead was turn the volume up to the highest setting.  I didn't know what to expect, except for the inevitable failure.  I was just waiting for something to go wrong.

We're there, and in my mind this thought keeps occurring, like those urgent bulletins that pop up when some breaking news is leaked to the media.  But even though you know exactly what's going to go across the screen, your eyes are glued to the bulletin, and nothing else.

............nothing's going to change, don't get your hopes up..........

I had heard of UBMS through some older kids at school.  They liked it, and one my friends was applying for it, so why not?  It wasn't like I was going to really get accepted.  That way I could say, "At least I tried."  A couple months later, I got a letter and miraculously I had been accepted.  This sudden acute wave of nausea and shock ran through my body, it seemed to start at the very core of me, and slowly creep towards the surface.  This shock was mainly due to the fact that a) I never thought in a million years I'd get accepted, and b) my friend had gotten her letter a week earlier, stating that she was on the 'waiting list.'  So I was going to go somewhere I'd never been, with a bunch of teenagers, where nobody knew me, or would understand me.  And I'd be alone.  Great.

The first day at Shawnee State, I could feel something inside me dying.  There were so many people there.  And there were several that actually seemed to know one another, had already made friends.  I was basically floating around in my own little world, not really wanting to get attached to any particular person.  Attachment always results in pain, that had been another one of my trustworthy mottos.  The next day, we had some of these 'getting to know you' activities.'  This actually gave me some time to relax and enjoy myself, for the first time in a long time.  Again no attachment, just friendly acquaintances.  The RA's seemed nice enough, and at least I was away from home.  My mind was now thinking, "Okay, I might be able to do this for awhile."

My whole strategy of not getting attached to anyone came crashing down like Buddy Holly's plane soon enough, though I didn't quite see the flames at first.  The nosedive started one day when I was in my room, and suddenly this girl from across the hall came almost galloping into the room.  She looked at me and my roommate, and said, "Hey, I'm Jesyka, and my roommate's Gabrielle, we live over there.  Just wanted to say Hi."  And with that she was gone.  I was a bit flustered, and impressed that she had just came over and announced her presence, but the next thing I knew we had some other planned event, so I didn't think too much of the new introduction.

I think the first time I actually started to see the wreckage of my strategy was when one night, my roommate and the girls from across the hall decided to take a walk to Sonic.  I was in the mood for walking and had nothing better to do, so I quickly joined in.  I didn't know these people very well, so I was still on close guard of letting myself out.  As we walked and talked, something strange happened.  We started to open up to one another, and I got more and more comfortable.  "I like them, and it's a possibility they might be able to stand being around me." This thought scared me, but at the same time seemed to shed a little light.  Hopes were not up though, just in case.  We kept walking, and soon realized our trusted guide, Gabrielle, who had assured us that she knew exactly where she was going, had gotten us lost in downtown Portsmouth.  This was not a good thing, but we faced the challenge with sudden bursts of hysterical laughter and pointless jokes.  We eventually found our way to the Sonic, after talking to a civilian, and many paranoid comments made by Jesyka concerning a red truck that seemed to be at every road we crossed.

That night I made friends.  The red alarm in my head was going crazy,  beeping warnings of taking chances.  I let my guard down, something I swore to never do.  My mind slowly throughout the following weeks transformed it's outlook, from not getting attached and keeping to myself, to actually opening up to people, and making friends.  Throughout my UBMS experience, I met so many great people, and I am extremely glad I didn't go with my initial strategy.  Maybe Buddy Holly was meant to go down in that plane.  After all, if he hadn't, there never would have been an "American Pie."

UBMS 2006 Poem

by Holly Forbes

When I think back on all of the summers
That I spent unproductively,
I thank my God in heaven
For bringing UBMS to me!

From Shawnee State to Chicago,
And everywhere in between,
I made memories that will last a lifetime
and friendships that can't be beat.

You may ask me why I feel so strong
So this I must confess
The answer, I will tell you
Is because I found myself.

I learned to be true to me
And I believe that I shined
People loved me for who I was
And they let me speak my mind.

Now I love to be myself
And live my life as just me
I have learned to speak what I believe
UBMS has set me free!

So for anyone considering
This place I know so well
I encourage and invite you
To find yourself as well!

Freshman Requirments for Admission:

Ohio State has a competitive admission process in which students are considered for admission based largely on their academic performance and credentials. Secondary factors include school and out-of-school activities. All students are considered under competitive standards except Ohio residents applying to an Ohio State regional campus in Lima, Mansfield, Marion, Newark, or to Ohio State ATI in Wooster.

Three primary factors are considered in our competitive admission review process:

  1. Successful completion of the college preparatory curriculum while in high school. The minimum college prep requirements are listed below. Numbers in ( ) represent the recommended number of units for strong preparation.
    • 4 units of college prep English
    • (4) 3 units of college prep math
    • (3) 2 units each of college prep science, social science and the same foreign language
    • 1 unit of a visual or performing art
    • 1 additional unit of the above courses
    • Students exceeding the minimum curriculum in math, natural resources, or foreign language will be given additional consideration.
  2. High school performance as evidenced by class rank or grade point average.
  3. Performance on the ACT or SAT (you must submit scores from one of the two tests).

You may be given additional consideration if:

  • you attend a competitive high school
  • you have taken accelerated courses (e.g. Honors, AP, IB)
  • you are a first-generation college student
  • you provide cultural, economic, racial, or geographic diversity
  • you possess particular outstanding talents
  • you have been involved in extracurricular activities, have had significant work experiences, or leadership positions
  • your high school performance was adversely affected by physical, mental, or learning environment factors
  • you are eligible for and will benefit from organized support services at Ohio State
Additional Requirements:
  • Ohio State requires that you receive a high school diploma from a chartered high school or GED to enroll.
  • Students attending Ohio State regional campuses must meet campus change requirements to enroll at the Columbus campus.
  • An official ACT or SAT score, sent directly from the agency, will be required for admission. Applicants must submit at least one score with results from a writing test. See the New Freshman Application Packet for details.

UBMS Photo Page

Heather Holland came up with the idea of sharing summer photos with one another through the internet.  She has setup a webpage through photobucket.com in which UBMS participants can share their photos and order a CD of photos if they desire.  The following are directions and a link so that you can view and upload your own photos.

  • save your pictures to a folder on your computer

  • go to www.photobucket.com

  • put in these two items:
    sign in name: UBMSsummer2005
    password: bubba

  • click on browse and find the folder your pictures are in

  • double click on the picture (it will bring you back to the main page) then click submit

  • it’ll take some time depending on how fast or slow your computer is, but your picture will load up there.

  • keep adding pictures from the summer, the final trip, anything to do with UBMS
