Bubba's Banter

Hey folks,

By the time most of you read this school will be back in session.  I would like to encourage each of you to get off to a strong start.  It truly is hard to believe that the summer program has zipped passed us.  After going at it for 6 weeks like we do, it is sometimes hard to adjust to things after summer.  We get used to seeing each of you around the campus and in our office and then you guys are gone.

Each of you should have received a UBMS Summer program survey in the mail with a SASE.  It is important that we get a 100% completion rate on these surveys.  My hope is to give you some feedback on the survey right here on the website.  Your opinion does matter to us.  Obviously, there are some things that we cannot change, however, there will always be room for improvement on how we conduct day-to-day operations.

I would like to thank those of you who have called, emailed, or given us cards of thanks from the summer.  In speaking for the rest of the staff, it means a lot to know that you appreciate the opportunity you have been given.  Sometimes we may wonder what type of impact the program is having, and when we receive some of the kind words that we have been presented with, we realize that everything is worth it.

With summer 2005 behind us you might think that we have some time to breathe.  Actually, things are speeding up for us once again.  Here is a little bit of what's on tap for us over the next several months.  The next time many of you visit us, we will have moved.  The UBMS office will be located in the ATC building on the 3rd floor next to the BASICS program.  At the present time, we are packing everything and will soon be making the move.

In the midst of moving, we are also in the process of selecting Bridge students for 2006.  The scholarship committee has received your applications and are reviewing them.  School visits are being scheduled and preparations for recruiting are underway.  Please watch the message board for information on school visits.  We need your help in recruiting new students for the upcoming year.  We will be pushing the academic side of things a little harder during our recruiting presentation.  Along with these items I will be working on our fall fundraiser, winter retreat, finalizing our end of the year report to the Department of Education, and working on establishing better alumni relations.  As a final note we have already begun preparations for summer 2006.

As you can see we have a full plate to keep us busy here.  I can't wait to get out to the schools to visit with each of you.  Until then, I will quote a famous former UBMS'er.  "Love, peace, and chicken grease".

Bubba out.

Ashley’s Advice

Hey Everyone! I hope you all enjoyed your summer, I know I did! By now you are all back in school or have started college. I wish you the best of luck! If you are a senior, it is time to start applying to different colleges and universities. My suggestion is to schedule as many visits as possible so that you can get a good idea of the campus' atmosphere. This can sometimes be a deciding factor. Make sure you get all applications in early and watch the deadlines. You may want to keep a folder that is clearly labeled for each due date. Do the same for scholarships. Keep your eyes and ears open for any scholarships you may be eligible for and apply to all of them. Even a small scholarship can help pay for books. Don't allow yourselves to get distracted with other things this year. Get organized now! :) I look forward to seeing all of you soon!

Homework Assignment

(Remember that it is essential we receive your assignment and that failure to complete assignments will affect your participation status for the summer.)

This month's assignment is to complete the summer evaluation that was sent to you.  It is important that we receive 100% completion on this.  Please take extra time to properly evaluate and critique the job that we are doing.  Enclosed with the evaluation is an SASE (that would be a self-addressed stamped envelope) so that we can ease the hassle of returning the evaluation to us.

The deadline for this assignment is Friday, September 9th.

UBMS Photo Page

Heather Holland came up with the idea of sharing summer photos with one another through the internet.  She has setup a webpage through photobucket.com in which UBMS participants can share their photos and order a CD of photos if they desire.  The following are directions and a link so that you can view and upload your own photos.

  • save your pictures to a folder on your computer
  • go to www.photobucket.com
  • put in these two items:
    sign in name: UBMSsummer2005
    password: bubba
  • click on browse and find the folder your pictures are in
  • double click on the picture (it will bring you back to the main page) then click submit
  • it’ll take some time depending on how fast or slow your computer is, but your picture will load up there.
  • keep adding pictures from the summer, the final trip, anything to do with UBMS

On Monday, September 29 @ 7p.m. Heather Holland and the Lady Logan Chieftains will be going head-to-head with Christine Myers and the Zane Trace Lady Pioneers.  A small contingent of UBMS'ers will be attending the game to cheer them both on.  If you are interested in meeting us in Chillicothe for the game drop us an email.
