Hey Folks,
I want to welcome the
new members of our UBMS family. You are beginning a
fantastic journey that the rest of us call UBMS.
Time is drawing near for the beginning of what I
hope will be a very exciting summer for each you. In
the office Steve, Sarah, and myself have been busy
little bees trying to put everything into place for
the summer. There will be some minor changes that I
hope will result in increasing the quality of the
program.
Steven and I will be
making visits to our new students over the course of
the next couple weeks. We will follow that up with
our Orientation/Parent Meeting on April 21st. This
meeting is mandatory and we will need at least one
parent or guardian at this meeting to sign paperwork
required for the summer program. This will provide
an opportunity for you to meet other students in the
program and allow your parent or guardian to ask us
questions. Following the parent meeting we will
conclude school visits for the rest of the year by
going out and meeting with all of our seniors.
UBMS is continuing to
embrace technology and change as we have just
completed our UBMS myspace page. This is in addition
to our alumni facebook page. Please check out the
UBMS page at the following link:
http://groups.myspace.com/ssuubms.
In the meantime,
please continue to work hard and push through the
end of the school year.
See you very soon,
Tim

First off, I would like to welcome
you new students to the Upward Bound
Math Science program. I believe
that you all are in for a wonderful
experience and will have the
opportunity to meet some really
great people and experience some
really awesome things. You, as well
as your families, should feel very
proud for being chosen and the other
accomplishments you have made so
far. There were some very good
candidates to choose from and the
selections did not come easy for the
staff. I am really looking forward
to meeting all of you in the next
couple of weeks on school visits and
at our parent meeting. I hope that
each of you are able to make it on
the 21st so not only for
your parents to meet us, but to also
give you the opportunity to meet and
talk with some of our veterans. If
there is anything that I can do to
make everything easier for you or if
you have any questions, don’t
hesitate to e-mail or call me. I’m
looking forward to not only spending
this summer with you, but the next
couple as well, and seeing you
transform into that real college
student.
Summer is getting closer and
closer. The excitement is building
up here as we begin to plan and
schedule all of the classes and
activities. Tim and I both agree
that we would love to get started
now. We have some awesome students
and I truly feel this is going to be
an amazing summer. My April advice
for each of you: Don’t slack off.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it
again—the grades you make now are
just as important as the grades you
made on the first day of school. I
know it is hard when the weather is
nice again and graduation is only a
few short weeks away, but stick with
it. If there is anything I can do,
give me a shout.
And Seniors---if you guys have any
leftover senior pictures that you
just can’t find anyone to give them
to, just a little hint for you—We
would love one.
HAPPY EASTER!

Homework Assignment
Remember, it is essential we
receive your assignment. If you are late, or do not complete
any two monthly assignments, you will not be considered eligible for
college visits.
Returning students need to finish
up the citation packets that were mailed to them and
send the MLA and APA citations either through e-mail
or regular mail. In addition to that assignment, all
students (new and returning) need to join the SSU
UMBS group page on myspace and introduce yourselves
in the forum. The link is:
http://groups.myspace.com/ssuubms
If you do not have access to myspace, just mail or
e-mail us an introduction and we will post it on the
page for you.
Remember, all assignments
must be up to date in order to be eligible for the
summer.
Assignments should be
sent to Steve's e-mail address:

UBMS Photo Page
Heather Holland
came up with the idea of sharing summer photos with one another
through the internet. She has setup a webpage through
photobucket.com in which UBMS participants can share their photos
and order a CD of photos if they desire. The following are
directions and a link so that you can view and upload your own
photos.
-
save your pictures to a folder on your computer
-
go to
www.photobucket.com
-
put in these two items:
sign in name:
UBMSsummer2005
password:
bubba
-
click on browse and find the folder your pictures
are in
-
double click on the picture (it will bring you back
to the main page) then click submit
-
it’ll take some time
depending on how fast or slow your computer is, but your picture
will load up there.
-
keep adding pictures from the summer, the final
trip, anything to do with UBMS

Sam Mills shares her experiences...
Q. What is your favorite
UBMS memory?
A.
hmm...too many to choose from...but one would definitely
be coming around the mountain at crater lake for the
first view...omg! it was so beautiful....or maybe the ra
skit my first year I almost peed my pants...it was so
funny!!
Q.
What courses are you taking and what
college do you go to?
A. right now I have Italian 102, studies in
fiction, ethics as an intro to philosophy, history of
Rome, and calc ....ohh and I go to Xavier (do you like
how I made it navy?? I do!)
Q.
What do you plan on doing with
your degree once you get out of college?
A. right now I'm undecided...but I'm working on
that
Q.
What is your favorite thing
about college?
A. hmm...I love
the friendships...and of course my 9:30am nap!!
Q.
How does college differ from
High School?
A. well, for
starters, I live at school now, haha....the main
difference from coming from rural Philo to urban
Cincinnati/Norwood, is the diversity...and I wouldn't
change that for anything...I love all the different
people, for all their different backgrounds...but no
worries, classes are so different, too. in high school I
had mostly lecture-type classes (except of course like
home ec or whatever) anyway, the professors' styles are
so different, from straight lecture classes to
discussion based classes, to open your mind and what do
you think? classes, there's such a variety...and all the
activities to get involved in!! from club and intramural
sports (basketball, soccer, softball, rugby, lacrosse,
etc.) to the different clubs (accounting club, French
club, premed club, etc.) to service opportunities like
habitat, and the cross-town helpout (a huge service day
with xu and uc, playing off the shootout, of course)
Q.
What advice do
you have about college to those who are still in High
School?
A. hmm...good question. I would say, don't give
up...don't give up on your school work, or your grades,
your attendance, or anything like that...don't give up
on the ACT, didn't do well the first time? try again!
don't give up on college applications, don't
EVER
give up on scholarship opportunities, don't give up on a
college because it's too expensive (if you are meant to
go there, there will be a way) don't not apply to a
school because you think you won't get in but more than
all of this, and this is a direct quotation from Dr.
Byrne (my history professor) "None of it will matter if
you don't have fun"...on that note...the best advice I
can give is HAVE FUN in high school and college and
whatever you find yourself doing, whichever path you
choose, but don't regret doing (or not doing)
anything!!!
I wish you all the
best...I know each one of you has great things ahead...I
believe in you....and thanks for the memories
