The primary goal of the Shawnee State
University Upward Bound Program is to motivate and to prepare students for success in college or technical education after high school.
How do we achieve our goals? By implementing the many services
and activities listed throughout these pages. Services are
offered to the following Upward Bound target schools:
Bloom-Vernon (South Webster)
Minford
New Boston (Glenwood)
Northwest
Portsmouth City
Sciotoville
Valley
Washington-Nile (Portsmouth West)
Wheelersburg
The Upward Bound program is 100% federally funded
through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education at $293,474
annually. The following objectives are taken directly from the
approved Shawnee State University Upward Bound grant proposal.
Upward Bound Program Objectives:
- 90% of all UB participants who
graduate will have achieved at the
proficient level during high school on state assessments in
reading/language arts and math
- 85% of 9th, 10th, & 11th grade
project participants served during each school year will continue to
participate in the Upward Bound Project during the next school year
- 80% of all UB participants who
graduate will enroll in a program of
postsecondary education by the fall term immediately following the
expected graduation date from high school
- 83% of all UB participants who
enrolled in a program of postsecondary education during the fall
term immediately following high school graduation will be enrolled
for the fall term of the second academic year
