Where Did GE Come From?

The Gamma Epsilon Chapter started from a group of women that were members of the local chapter of Delta Sigma Tau.  DST was founded February 6, 1994 on the Shawnee State University campus.  Prior to the time DST was founded, there was no present sorority in campus.  There had been a number of women on campus that saw the importance of a sorority at Shawnee State University.  This brought Polly Workman and Jacqueline Walley Young together to form the local sorority, Delta Sigma Tau.

Jackie Young, original founding officer of DST Local Sorority (Alpha Chapter) on the Mount Union College campus, in Alliance, Ohio, was approached by Polly Workman to get help with starting a sorority on campus.  Due to Jackie Young's experience with local sororities on other campuses, she and Polly Workman worked together to organize 32 women interested in going Greek.

Shawnee State University's local sorority, DST took on the name, symbols, colors, flowers, plants, jewels, and the motto that their sister sorority of DST at Mount Union College campus proposed.  They then became the Beta Chapter.  The bonds of sisterhood started to grow closer as the women began organizing, planning, and forming activities.  These are bonds that will remain part of the Greek system here at Shawnee State.  January 1994 brought forth one advisor and one senior to the other 31 members into what has now become Delta Sigma Tau local sorority.

During the school year of 2002-2003 the ladies of DST made the decision that they wanted more out of their college sorority days; they wanted those days to last forever.  So they decided that they wanted to join a national organization.  After Theta Phi Alpha came and met the ladies of DST the ladies found that TPA holds many of the same ideals of their women and they decided it would be a perfect match.  The ladies of DST worked tirelessly for three months in order to get everything ready and approved to become a chapter.  Finally on May 17, 2003 the Beta chapter of Delta Sigma Tau became the Gamma Epsilon chapter of Theta Phi Alpha.
