Student Support Services is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and provides support services to first generation college students, low-income college students, and students with disabilities persuing a four year degree. Help is also provided through:

  • Individual and group tutoring in Math and English.
  • Assistance completing financial aid, scholarship, and loan applications.
  • Career counseling and occupational information.
  • Instructional materials and supplies available for loan.
  • Graduate school counseling and campus visitations.
  • Study groups and informal support networks.
  • Workshops on personal and academic issues.
  • Cultural activities.

These are just a few of the comments our former students have made:

"Student Support Services staff were very friendly. When things weren't going well I could always count on them to make me feel more confident."

"I believe that student camaraderie may be the single greatest asset this program has.  We are all in this together and after a few years we become family."

"The tutoring was great help! I have met many new friends! The resources available are WONDERFUL (i.e. computers, books, supplies)."

"Staff helped me hang in there when I was about ready to give up and quit trying."

"They let me know when I was doing poorly in a class so I could get help."

Mission Statement

Student Support Services

The mission of Student Support Services as a federal TRiO program is to encourage and assist people who are traditionally under-represented in post-secondary education because of income, family educational background, disability, or in the preparation for, and completion of a post-secondary education.

To accomplish this mission, the TRiO program must:

·         Serve as advocate for success in higher education

·         Provide services to assist individuals to achieve their educational goals

·         Facilitate the educational development of individuals served

·         Provide an environment that recognized the diversity of backgrounds and learning styles of the individuals served

·         Develop collaborative relationships with campus and surrounding communities to promote and environment conducive to the completion of a post-secondary education

The TRIO program must incorporate student learning and student development in its mission. The TRIO program must enhance overall educational experiences.  The TRIO program must develop record, disseminate, implement and regularly review its mission and goals.  Mission statements must be consistent with the mission and goals of the institution and with the standards in this document.  The TRIO programs must operate as an integral part of Shawnee State University’s overall mission.
