Tutoring Information Tutoring for all subject areas is available at no cost in the Student Success Center. Students requiring a math or English tutor must first access the Math lab, 4th floor Massie (rm.436) three times or the Reading/Writing Center in front of the 031 lab Administration Building Massie Hall. After three attempts, if a student requires an individual tutor for math or English then an individual tutor will be assigned with proper documentation from either labs.
All tutoring is to be done in the Student Success Center with
exceptions being made for specific courses that utilize software not
found in the Success Center. Other special arrangements can be made
by contacting the Student Success Center.
Plan on bringing all pertinent information concerning the topic to be covered during your
tutoring session. Also, bring a list of questions that you want the tutor to answer.
You should plan to study the entire scheduled time. After the tutoring session, sign the
tutor's timesheet so the tutor will get paid for the session. PLEASE CHECK YOUR SHAWNEE MY MAIL ACCOUNT FOR YOUR TUTOR ASSIGNMENT. MAKE SURE TO REPLY TO ALL WHEN CONFIRMING THE SCHEDULED TUTORING SESSION. FAILURE TO CONFIRM A TUTORING CONTRACT WITHIN A 14 DAY PERIOD WILL RESULT IN A CANCELLATION OF THE TUTORING CONTRACT. Tutee Policies: 1. Tutors do not take the place of your instructor, nor do they do your work for you. Tutoring is a supplement to your regular classroom attendance and homework. Do not ask your tutor to do your work for you. To do so would be plagiarism resulting in academic dismissal for both you and the tutor. 2. You will need to check your Shawnee Email on a regular basis. If you have an alternate email please provide, but you will still need to check your Shawnee Email. This is not optional. You will be notified via email of the time and date of your tutoring sessions. Upon receiving an email with your tutoring schedule, you are required to Reply To All from your email account to confirm that schedule to both the tutor and our staff. 3. Upon your first meeting with a new tutor, go to the Success Center front counter; tell them the name of the tutor you are there to meet. Then take a seat at the front of the Success Center. Exchange telephone numbers with your tutor, in order to contact each other in the event canceling a session becomes necessary. Failing to make direct contact with your tutor, will result in a NO SHOW. 4. As a student of Shawnee State University, you are entitled to one hour of tutoring per week for each course in which you are currently enrolled. Do not attempt to schedule/arrange your own tutor and bring this person/schedule in to the Success Center. This is unacceptable. To assure tutor eligibility at an acceptable skill level, the Success Center arranges/schedules for all tutoring. Quality service requires us to follow the program’s guidelines. To be paid for their time/tutoring, tutor scheduling must be arranged by the Success Center staff. If a student requires more than one hour per week, please contact the Tutor Coordinator at tutor@mymail.shawnee.edu 5. If classes /university have been closed due to weather or other unforeseeable reason then all tutoring sessions will be cancelled for that day.
For each tutorial session: 1. Bring all books, assignments, notes, handouts, worksheets, and graded work for the course in which you are being tutored. Plan to study with your tutor the fully appointed time. 2. At the end of the tutoring session, sign your tutor’s timesheet so he/she will receive payment for the session. If your tutor does not show up within 15 minutes of the appointed time, notify the SSC front counter staff. If your tutor cannot be reached and after 30 minutes still has not shown up, you must record a "no show" and have a SSC staff initial the No Show book. If you are uncertain of this process, be sure to ask a front counter staff for assistance. A tutee is allowed two “no-shows”. The third "no show" results in tutor cancellation for the remaining of the semester.
