Job Title Dean, College of Arts & Sciences

Job Announcement Shawnee State University, the regional state university of Southern Ohio, is seeking highly qualified candidates to fill the position of Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.  Reporting to the Provost, this full-time administrative position is responsible for providing dynamic leadership and a clear vision for the College of Arts & Sciences, maintaining and strengthening the quality of academic programs and faculty, and working with the Provost and the other deans to help fulfill the university’s educational mission.  The Dean is the “face of the college” in the community and must be connected to the needs of the community and region, occasionally teaches courses as needed and desired.

GENERAL SUMMARY

Provide dynamic leadership and a clear vision for the College of Arts & Sciences.  Responsibilities include maintaining and strengthening the quality of programs and faculty, and working with the provost and the other deans to help fulfill the university's educational mission. 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.     Plans, organizes, and directs the academic programs in accordance with university mission, goals and policies in order to obtain optimal student learning and program cost effectiveness.

2.     Develops and implements goals and objectives of the college in order to provide educational services utilizing appropriate human and physical resources in accordance with the university mission.

3.     Assures continuous curriculum improvement and innovation by evaluating program effectiveness through the assimilation of a variety of information from schools, industry, surveys and the like.  Proposes changes in policy or curriculum to the Provost for consideration.

4.     Oversees scheduling of courses in conference with Department Chairs and other Deans or appropriate personnel in order to provide optimal and cost-effective educational services at university, college and department levels.

5.     Coordinates development and planning for new programs. Reviews proposals for same and submits to appropriate persons for consideration and/or approvals.

6.     Manages and implements the faculty collective bargaining agreement.

7.     Works with faculty committees to recruit, interview, recommend new faculty for hire. Evaluates the performance of staff and Department Chairs, and if necessary, recommends corrective action needed.  Confer with chairs regarding personnel actions as needed.

8.     Encourages and supports the ongoing professional development of faculty and staff to better meet the needs of students and achieve improvements in programs.

9.     Manages the tenure and promotion system in coordination with Provost and other Deans. Recommends promotions and tenure.

10.   Recommends and controls college budget in order to provide optimal services in a cost-effective manner. Provides leadership in fundraising and promotion activities to strengthen the college.

11.   Establishes and maintains working relationships with a variety of university and community members. The Dean is the “face of the college” in the community and must be connected to the needs of the community and region.

12.   Occasionally teaches courses as needed and desired.

13.   Coordinates student and university recordkeeping as required by accrediting agencies, the Ohio Board of Regents, and departmental needs.  Prepares reports as needed.

14.   Maintains knowledge of current trends and best practices in higher education issues, faculty development, and teaching, learning and assessment.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
Reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs/Provost

WORKING CONDITIONS
Normal office environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, heat and the like.

Minimum Qualifications

·      Significant academic experience in at least one field represented by the academic programs of the college, while also having familiarity with the broad array of fields in the  college.

·      Earned doctorate and a strong record of teaching, scholarship, and service consistent with the tenured academic rank of professor.

·      Relevant administrative experience, including managing a promotion and tenure system and an understanding of working in a collective bargaining environment.

·      Interpersonal and communication skills needed in order to work effectively with community and university members; manage the assigned staff collegially and to communicate clearly and concisely.

·      Analytical skills needed in order to identify needs and goals, develop and design services to meet those needs and to analyze the effectiveness of services rendered.
