Development Foundation Scholarships Awarded By Shawnee State University
2008-2009 Academic Year

Shawnee State University, in Portsmouth, Ohio, has an extensive financial aid program to help students meet some of the expenses of a college education. Although much of this assistance is based on need, we are pleased and proud to be able to offer, through the generosity of others, a number of scholarships based on academic ability and individual achievement. Most of these scholarship funds are administered through the Shawnee State University Development Foundation.

ALLEN, JIMMY, MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP  

Mobility impaired (requiring use of wheelchair), nontraditional, full time SSU student in good academic standing.

AMERICAN LEGION POST 23, SCHOLARSHIP   

Resident of Scioto County or member (or family member) of Post 23 with a GPA of 2.00. Preference given to members (or family members) of Post 23. Copy of membership card must accompany application.

APPLETON FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP

Sophomore, junior, or senior pursuing an associate or baccalaureate degree with GPA of at least 2.5, preference given to GPA of 3.0 or better. Must submit with two letters of recommendation from SSU faculty. MUST COMPLETE FAFSA.

ASCH, DR. SOL, SCHOLARSHIP   

High school graduate or college student with 3.50 GPA.

AUTISM PROJECT OF SOUTHERN OHIO SCHOLARSHIP

College student entering senior year with a 3.0 GPA. Must exhibit financial need. MUST COMPLETE FAFSA. Required program: Teacher education with an emphasis in special education or intervention specialist.

BESCO, DAVID G., MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP  

College sophomore, junior, or senior. Resident of Ohio with 3.50 GPA overall and 3.00 in major and professional education courses. Required Program: Teacher education/mathematics

BESCO, GALEN S., MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP  

College sophomore, junior, or senior. Resident of Ohio with 3.50 GPA overall and 3.00 in major and professional education courses. Required Program: Teacher education/English

BIG SANDY SUPERSTORE SCHOLARSHIP

Applicant may be a current employee, a spouse and/or a dependent of a current employee who has completed one (1) year and/or one thousand (1,000) hours of employment with Big Sandy Furniture, one of its affiliates, and/or others within the footprints of the Vanhoose-Stewart Foundation.

BLACKBURN, LEO AND JULIA, CROSSING THE THRESHOLD SCHOLARSHIP  

Graduate of an accredited preparatory business school with an associate degree in an area of business (i.e., accounting, secretarial, computers); GPA of at least 2.00; good character. Preference given to Southeastern Business College graduates. Required Program: Baccalaureate in business

BLAIR, JAMES AND MABEL SCHOLARSHIP

Student entering sophomore, junior, or senior year, resident of Pike County, GPA of at least 2.0, and exhibiting financial need. MUST COMPLETE FAFSA.

Resident of Scioto, Adams, Pike, Lewis, or Greenup Counties with a 3.0 GPA, involved in community activities.  MUST COMPLETE FAFSA.

BOYNTON, DR. J.R., MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP  

College sophomore, junior, or senior who is a resident of Scioto County and have a  3.25 GPA. Required Program: Enrollment in a four-year degree program

BYRNE, FRANK, SCHOLARSHIP  

SSU Sophomore, junior, or senior who has excelled in foreign languages and linguistics (3.0 GPA in these courses).  Must also have a 3.0 GPA  overall.  Preference given Scioto and surrounding counties in Ohio and Kentucky.  MUST COMPLETE FAFSA   

CALLIHAN, STAN, MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP 

Middle income, full time student in good academic standing.  Preference given to Kentucky residents.  MUST COMPLETE FAFSA. Required Program:  Education with a history or social science concentration

CANTER, JUDITH A., SCHOLARSHIP  

Scioto County business or education major with a 2.00 GPA and an expected federal family contribution of 1500 to 4000. MUST COMPLETE FAFSA.

COLL, JULIA AND FRANK BYRNE, SCHOLARSHIP FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

COMMUNITY COMMON SCHOLARSHIP  

High school seniors who live within the zip codes covered by the Community Common’s area of circulation and exhibit an interest in journalism or communication.

College student entering their sophomore, junior, or senior year from Scioto County, Ohio or Greenup or Lewis County, Kentucky with a GPA of 3.0. Must exhibit financial need. MUST COMPLETE FAFSA. Required program: Fine, digital, or performing arts

DAEHLER, EDWARD J., MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP IN LEGAL ASSISTING   

Legal assisting technology student, entering second year of the two-year or fourth year of the four-year program with a minimum 2.5 GPA. Financial need considered. MUST COMPLETE FAFSA.

DIDDLE, IRA AND FLORA, MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FOR THE PROFESSIONS  

Resident of Scioto or Pike County with a 3.25 high school or 2.90 college GPA. MUST COMPLETE FAFSA. Required Program: Natural or physical science, pre-medicine, or education

EDWARDS, BETTY C., NURSING SCHOLARSHIP  

Scioto or Adams County resident. Full-time student of sophomore standing having attained a 3.00 GPA or better and be of good character. Required Program: Associate degree nursing or bachelor's degree in nursing

ELLIOTT, ELBERT L. AND EVELYN M., MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Resident of Adams or Scioto Counties majoring in elementary or secondary education.

ELLSESSER, PEG MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP  

Shawnee State University junior or senior must have a 3.0 GPA.  MUST COMPLETE FAFSA. Required Program:  Athletic training or sports management

FACULTY FUNDED SCHOLARSHIP

High school senior or college student with a 2.50 GPA.

A "Second Chance" scholarship for SSU students. Must have attended SSU, been placed on academic suspension, used the appeal process to gain readmittance, and successfully completed the term following readmittance. MUST COMPLETE FAFSA.

GATES, LARRY AND PENNY, SCHOLARSHIP   

Shawnee State University junior or senior seeking a degree in a “helping profession.” Must have a  3.00 GPA, be of good character, and exhibit financial need. First time recipients. MUST COMPLETE FAFSA. Required Program: BS or BA, including but not limited to psychology or sociology

GLENWOOD SCHOLARSHIP  

Glenwood High School graduate (having attended a minimum of three years while residing in New Boston, Ohio). Awards based on financial need. MUST COMPLETE FAFSA.

GLOCKNER COMMUNITY SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP

Graduating senior of West, Northwest, Valley, Minford, South Webster, Wheelersburg, Green, Clay, New Boston, East, Notre Dame, Portsmouth, Greenup County, or Lewis County, with a GPA of 2.0 and demonstrated involvement in community service.  

HAIRSTON, MICHAEL, ART SCHOLARSHIP  

Portsmouth High School graduating senior . MUST COMPLETE FAFSA.  Required Program: Bachelor’s degree in visual arts

HELLER, GEORGE MEMORIAL BASKETBALL SCHOLARSHIP

Eligible basketball player (men or women) eligible according to NAIA rules.

Graduate of Ross or Scioto County who demonstrates financial need and has a 3.00 GPA. MUST COMPLETE FAFSA. Required Program: Associate degree nursing

Former student athlete, in good academic standing, who has exhausted athletic scholarship.  Must be entering fifth year and be within two semesters of graduation.

High school senior or college student with fewer than 45 credit hours and a 2.80 GPA residing in Scioto County in Ohio or Greenup or Lewis County in Kentucky; having financial need. Preference given to students from single-parent families. MUST COMPLETE FAFSA. Required Program: Teacher education

Senior at East High School (Sciotoville) who has received two letters in high school sports and has a 3.00 GPA.

Incoming freshman engineering major with a 2.8 GPA and exhibiting financial need. MUST COMPLETE FAFSA.

Resident of Scioto County, 3.00/4.00 GPA either in high school or college. ACT composite of 20 or SAT score of 1000. Proof of admission to Shawnee State University. Required Program: Business-related field

LUTE FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP

Student entering sophomore year, with a minimum 3.0 GPA.  Need based award with preference to middle income.  MUST COMPLETE FAFSA.  Required Program:  Business major with general business, accounting, management information systems, or business administration concentration.  

LYNN, ARTHUR D., FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP  

Junior in the SSU Honors Program and a graduate of Portsmouth High School. Required Program: Business Administration, economics

MAGGARD, DALE, MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Former student athlete, in good academic standing, who has exhausted athletic scholarship.  Must be entering fifth year and be within two semesters of graduation.  

MCCOWEN, EDWARD O. AND EDWARD R. (REX), ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

Graduate of a Scioto Count rural high school who demonstrates financial need.  Preference given to American history or government majors. MUST COMPLETE FAFSA.

MCELHANEY HONORS SCHOLARSHIP  

High school senior enrolling the fall term after graduation with a 3.0 GPA and ACT score of 25 or higher.  Must be degree-seeking and complete a minimum of 15 hours each semester.  Non-renewable.

MCFARLAND, NANCY CAROLYN MILLER, SCHOLARSHIP

Graduating senior of Wheelersburg High School, 2.0 GPA. MUST COMPLETE FAFSA.

MCGINNIS, VIVIAN, SCHOLARSHIP FOR NURSING

College student with at least sophomore standing with GPA of 3.0 or better. Required program: Nursing

McKINLEY, JOSEPH W., SCHOLARSHIP  

Graduate of Valley High School or Northwest High School preferred.    Required Program: Teacher education

McKINLEY, OCTAVIA N., SCHOLARSHIP   

Graduate of  Valley or Northwest High School planning to attend SSU on a full-time basis. Required Program: Nursing, occupational therapy, or physical therapist assistant with preference given to nursing

Current legal assisting technology student or a current student pursuing a bachelor's degree with a concentration in legal assisting, residing in Scioto or Lawrence County, having financial need. MUST COMPLETE FAFSA.

MICKLETHWAITE, HAROLD, SCHOLARSHIP  

High school graduate or GED recipient with a 2.50 GPA. This scholarship is intended to encourage all students to attend college, so a higher GPA is not necessary. MUST COMPLETE FAFSA. Required Program: Business

MILLER, JAMES B., SCHOLARSHIP  

College sophomore, junior, or senior business majors who reside in southern Ohio or northern Kentucky, seeking either an associate or baccalaureate degree.  Required Program:  Business

Scioto County student of at least sophomore standing with a 3.0 GPA or better. Required Program: Associate degree in physical therapy or respiratory therapy, bachelor's degree in Nursing, or master's degree in Occupational Therapy

RIFFE, VERN, SCHOLARSHIP   

Freshmen who graduated from Scioto or Pike County high schools. Four awards based on academic standing (min. 3.00 GPA); four based on demonstrated financial need. Scholarships rotate among school districts. MUST COMPLETE FAFSA.

ROGERS, ROY, SCHOLARSHIP   

Graduate of Scioto County high school and member of a 4-H club. Proof of membership must accompany application. MUST COMPLETE FAFSA.

Students with a minimum 3.00 GPA who demonstrates financial need. MUST COMPLETE FAFSA. Required Program: English major

Full time student who is a Scioto County resident and has a 2.8 GPA or higher.  Preference given to student pursuing a career in insurance.   MUST COMPLETE FAFSA.  Required program:  Business

SKITARELIC-SWANSON FAMILY MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP    

Shawnee State University two-year or four-year student who exhibits financial need and outstanding aptitude, enthusiasm, and performance. MUST COMPLETE FAFSA.  Required Program: Medical laboratory 

SMALLEY, GINA, SCHOLARSHIP

Student accepted into the dental hygiene program and a resident of Adams or Highland counties with preference to a graduate of Peebles High School. Exhibit financial need. MUST COMPLETE FAFSA.

SPRIGGS FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP 

Full-time student with a 3.0 GPA. Must be a son or daughter of a Scioto County firefighter, police officer, state trooper, or sheriff deputy who has been a full- time employee for at least one year.  Letter of verification of employment is required.

SSU EDUCATIONAL TALENT SEARCH SCHOLARSHIP  

High school senior in Pike, Lawrence, or Scioto County Educational Talent Search Program with 3.00 GPA and a minimum ACT composite of 18. Extra-curricular activities and community involvement are considered. MUST COMPLETE FAFSA.  

SSU UPWARD BOUND SCHOLARSHIP  

Upward Bound high school senior with a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale and minimum ACT composite of 18. Extracurricular activities and community involvement are considered. MUST COMPLETE FAFSA.

SSU UPWARD BOUND MATH SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP  

Upward Bound Math Science high school senior with a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale and minimum ACT composite of 18. Extracurricular activities and community involvement are considered. MUST COMPLETE FAFSA.

TAYLOR, FRANK, SCHOLARSHIP  

Seniors residing in Scioto, Pike, and Lawrence Counties (at least one of whom is a graduate of SCJVS). Applicants must have a minimum ACT score of 20.

THOMAS, LILLIAN WILTSHIRE, SCHOLARSHIP   

Graduate of Portsmouth West High School year of award, having been a student of Washington Local School District for four years and seeking an associate or baccalaureate degree. Must have a 3.00 GPA; be active in church, school, and community; and exhibit financial need. First-time recipients only. MUST COMPLETE FAFSA.

TODT, COURTNEY ERIN, MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP  

Full-time SSU student entering sophomore year of a baccalaureate program, 3.0 GPA, involved in community activities, and has as a goal having a positive impact on children. Must indicate this goal on the scholarship application form. MUST COMPLETE FAFSA.

VERI FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP  

Degree-seeking student with at least 45 credit hours or sophomore standing with a minimum 3.00 GPA. MUST COMPLETE FAFSA.

WALKER, JOHN, ALLIED HEALTH SCHOLARSHIP

Graduate of Portsmouth West High School with a 3.0 GPA. Must be accepted in an allied health program. MUST COMPLETE FAFSA. Required program: Health Sciences

WHIPPLE, DUDLEY P. AND LAURALENA, SCHOLARSHIP    

High school senior or college student with a 2.5 GPA.

WILSON, DR. ROBERT L., WRITING SCHOLARSHIP FOR POETS    

SSU senior with an overall GPA of 3.0 and 3.5 in major. Must show clear evidence of poetry writing and submit an essay as to why applicant is a deserving recipient. Financial need is considered. MUST COMPLETE FAFSA.

Scholarships Offered By Outside Organizations

Other organizations may offer scholarships that can be used at Shawnee State University.  The following are examples of scholarships awarded by outside agencies.  Please check with your guidance counselor or the Financial Aid Office for additional information. The scholarships listed in this section are awarded by clubs, organizations and businesses and are for use only at Shawnee State University.  Each has its own set of criteria and the amount of the award may differ.  In addition, each requires its own application form, which is available from the agency or individual listed or the Shawnee State University Financial Aid Office.  Completed applications should be mailed to the address noted in "Where to Apply".

  • AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN PORTSMOUTH BRANCH SCHOLARSHIP

Junior or senior woman currently enrolled full-time at Shawnee State University. Must be a legal resident of Scioto County and be at least 25 years of age and minimum GPA of 3.0.  Where to apply: AAUW Scholarship Committee, 1555 Kinneys Lane, Portsmouth, OH 45662. Deadline: July 1
